I just bought a secondhand Dell Optiplex 280GX, which is a small desktop that's designed to use a IDE laptop CDROM drive. I swapped in the DVD-ROM that came in my Inspiron 8200 years ago, and have no problems. I then tried the Chiyomi TSD80Y1 drive I have around (works fine in my Inspiron) and it came up as unrecognized by the Optiplex BIOS.
I bought the drive new from someone other than Dell years ago, and I'm sure they wouldn't be any help even if I could remember who I bought it from.
I updated the Optiplex BIOS to the latest available, but it didn't help.
I can get a Lite-On DL GSA-T10N DVD-RW laptop drive on eBay for about $30 plus shipping, and I'm considering that option too.
