If you intend doing away with DVD recording, a better option would be to get a PVR that has the ability to store video recordings on an USB drive. As this way you'll not be paying for a combined DVD recorder if you intend using the USB only for off-loading recordings.
Just out of curiosity, which region or country are you based in? This will give us a better idea of what to suggest, as many PVRs are specific to certain regions due to limitations to recording PAL or NTSC.
One example I can think of off hand is the Conceptronic media recorders. These have a built-in tuner and PVR capabilities. They record to an internal hard disk like most PVRs and recordings can be transferred to a USB pen drive or hard disk or over a network (for the networked versions). Recordings are in the MPEG2 format, which can be played on a PC or another media player with a USB port.
Be sure to research a PVR with USB drives before deciding on one, as some will encrypt recordings that are placed on an external drive, limiting playback to only the PVR that made the recording, e.g. TiVo's in the US.
