Do I understand your problem correct, your optical drive works with data media (i.e. CD with pictures) but if you insert an audio CD you will not hear sound. But the software CD player (i.e. Windows Mediaplayer) plays the audio CD? Is this correct? I assume if you insert a CD with MP3 on it, it works also. Only audio CD does not work.
If this is the case, I think the audio cable between your optical drive and sound card is missing or not correctly plugged in.
The cable should look like the following picture (I did not find a really great picture) but I guess it shows everything you need to identify the cable.
Note: This picture shows an Y adapter. With this Y adapter you can plug 2 optical drives to the sound card. The normal audio cable has only 2 plugs, not three.
Here is where I should have put Quote, sorry …I have an older Compaq Presario running XP Home SP2. I’ve tried 2 cd ROM drives, Philips CDD4851/71 and ASUS CRN-4832AS … they both work in another PC running XP. I can put in a data or game or picture cd in and they work. When I put in a .wav or .cda file music cd the unit/s will not start and the properies screen of the cd shows 00bytes used 00bytes free … Both realone and windowsmedia players do not recognize the cd. I set them to all files and the tracks will show but as before no reaction … I’ve tried with audio cable attached and disconnected. All the cd’s are functional in other PC.
