Cdfreaks.com LiteOn 52x Review - Questions

Hi,
I’ve got a few questions regarding the cdfreaks.com LTR-52246S review (http://www.cdfreaks.com/document.php3?Doc=99&Page=9)

As described in the text the drive (used as a READER) can’t produce a perfect image of WarCraft III:

The backup worked in the burner itself, but it failed in a Pioneer DVD-115! Lowering read speed didn’t help. When using a Toshiba SD-M1502 as reader, the backup worked. So the new LiteOn drive is not a good subchannel reader for CloneCD.

It also fails making a working BWA/TwinPeak/CloneCD-Copy of UT 2003:

The created backup runs in the LTR-52246S flawlessly, but fails in a Pioneer DVD-115. But whether a twinpeaked disc works or not on a drive depends mainly on the drive on which you want to play the disc. If a reader which cannot produced good BWA files is used, then the backup will probably run in no drive at all. It is by the way pure chance that writing of WarCraft 3 and Unreal Tournament 2003 took exactly the same time.
Question 1: In the WarCraft III passage it is mentioned that the copy does work with a Toshiba DVD as a reader, but no mention if you can produce a working copy of UT 2003 using the exact same method and again the Toshiba instead of the LiteOn as a reader… does it work this way?

Question 2: The oh-so-often-asked ASUS-or-LiteOn-question… would these 2 problems (WarCraft III and UT 2003) also occur with the ASUS 52x as writer (and Toshiba as reader)?

Thanks a lot…

UT2003 and Warcraft III use different versions of the SecuRom protection: Warcraft III is pretty easy to copy since it only has an improved check for SecuRom. The only problem here was that the Lite-On recorders could not read the SubChannel reliably which caused imperfect back-ups. This problem was easily solved when you used a better reader for the SubChannels such as the Toshiba drive. The problem was not in the writing.

UT 2003 uses a new SecuRom version which uses some kind of timing mechanism which cannot be copied normally and can only be emulated. So your second question ASUS vs. Lite-On regarding these particular two games is: yes it will read Warcraft III better but it will also fail with UT 2003.

Keep in mind though that the problem with the new SecuRom (v4.80) already has some working solutions. You can read this thread for more information on this.

Thanks for you reply.

But the method described in the thread you mentioned is exactly this BWA/TwinPeak/CloneCD-way used in the review…
So: As the LiteOn already failed in the review and according to you the ASUS will also do, is there ANY drive/program-combo that can produce a copy of this particular game that works in a Pioneer DVD-115?

And what about the BWA-file that you can download in the Here Now - .BWA files for Download-thread - it says “## Unreal Tournament 2003 4.83.11.0005 - from ViRuS2k: LTR-52246S”, so it’s made by exactly this drive… won’t this one work on the Pioneer DVD too?
