CD-RW/DVD does not see DVDs

I have an IBM ThinkPad T30 (model 2366-R6G, latest BIOS) with a CD-RW/DVD (type HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4160N), running XP SP2, everything updated. Problem: It reads CD-ROMs and Audio CDs, but not DVDs. It tries to access the DVD, but just comes up with the “please insert…” Any tips?

This is probably one of those noob questions that’s been flogged do death before, but I have searched… Any help is greatly appreciated!

Optical drives use a different laser for DVD. Maybe the DVD laser died.

I had exactly the same issue. After having search on the WEB, I understood it is not related the driver etc. So, I detached the combo unit from thinkpad (it’s easy) and used loop to see if there is some dirt on the lens. I noticed that there is an angled mirror under lens. I used a toothpick with special lens cleaner agent to clean under loop. It worked well. I hope it helps you either.
