CD Burning Problems

I have an Acer computer that has been rebuilt, WinXP Professional, Acer CDRW 4x8x32, and things were fine, until I started running slow on space, so I compressed a lot of files. When I restarted my computer a couple days later, I could not get past the black start up screen, because something needed was compressed. Well, being a single mother of 2, and being low on funds, I had to try to fix it myself. I Know just a little about pc’s, anyways, Only CD I had was WinXP Home, so I popped in cd, had to reformat, not sure I did it right, but was able to start my pc again. Now, when I try to burn a music cd, which I had to replace ALL my music files, it will go all the way to the end, eject my cd, and tell me that it could not burn files to cd, although it actually does burn 3 or 4 or 5 of the songs, I am using Windows Media Player 10, I had 9 and it done the same thing. All new CD’s, 3 different brands. What do I need to do, or where do I ned to start to fix this problem?
ANY help would be greatly appreciated.
