Cassette tape to DVD?

Greetings:

I’ve some audio tapes I’d like to move-over to a DVD. I’ve a standalone RCA DVD recorder that I can hook-up to to a dual-cassette player but I’m not sure DVD’s will record without a video component/signal.

Is that true?

Why not hook up a casette player to the line-in of your soundcard and start recording?
And why use dvd’s when you can use cheap cd-r’s?
