Can't turn DVDs ripped by Gold into AVIs with Platinum

I’ve done some searching and can’t find this one so apologies now if I’m asking something that’s been asked before.

My problem is this:

I’ve been using DVDGold for a long time, and DVDExpress before that and recently upgraded to Platinum so that I could squash DVDs into AVIs.

It works fine with new DVDs but crashes whenever I point it to a folder of a disc previously ripped by Express or Gold. All Windows (Vista) tells me that the software has stopped working.

Am I missing some subtle setting about encryption or is there something else?
