Can't record with phillips dvdr600vr

HI. I got a secondhand Phillips dvdr600vr from someone.
It works fine as far as recording and playing DVD’s but now I’m trying to record from VHS to DVD, and I can’t seem to get it to work.
I got the instructions to do it and followed them but it doesn’t work.

Basically it says to put in the VHS tape, play it till the spot you want it to record, hit stop, then put it into DVD mode hit record.
then go back to VCR mode, and hit [U]Dubbing/U] this is suppose dot put it into recording standby mode…and it shows a little illustration of what the screen will look like.
At this point my screen just shows a white X.
It then says hit the Dubbing button again and it will start the recording.
REC will appear on the display panel…Again my screen just shows a white X.
I’ve tried it with several different VHS tapes and several different DVD’s and same problem.
I was just hoping that someone might have an idea why it’ s not working.
Any help appreciated.

Are the tapes commercial releases or home made? Could be copy protection…

No, I tried a store bought tape first, but then I tried a tape I had from tv I recorded…Now that I think of it it was a pretty old tape so maybe I’ll try it again with a newer self recorded tape and see what happens.
