i don’t see how settings in windows would prevent booting from an ubuntu cd. yet i have just (yesterday) installed windows 7 from a dvd. the drive simply refuses to recognize the presence of a cd. any cd. retail, homemade, rw, or audio.
all DVDs tried have been just fine. rip/burn a movie … OK. burn a downloaded image … no problems. just tried DVDInfoPro. claims all is well. textbook stuff. just that with a cd in the drive it reads ‘Drive Not Ready’.[/QUOTE]
CDs and DVDs use different lasers. A drive can easily read one but not the other. I’d try cleaning the lens. Especially if it spins up OK when you insert a CD.
