Can't get my Lite-On 1633S to write above 8x

I have a few HP Writer’s that I succesfully flashed over to the BenQ and they are burning SWEEET. But I have this one Lite-On 1633S and have flashed it with the Memorex which was no help. I have tried all the newest firmwares and now running the BS41. No matter what I try I cannot get this drive to write above 8x and it claims to do +R @ 16x. Anyone have any suggestions on how I can get this drive to truly write @ 16x Please…

are you using media that’s actually supposed to be able to be written at 16x? the available write speeds you can select are based on a combination of the drive’s firmware and the information contained within the disc itself (the drive will check its firmware and see what speeds you’re supposed to be able to write the disc at).

Hey KIDDSCRIPT…

First off, I’m not sure why your flashing a Liteon with memorex. Doesn’t sound wise to me. I’m using BS41 in mine and it works fine at 16X as long as I use my Verbatim 16X+R Disks. Better check your media and let us know what your using. And hope you didbn’t blow the drive by flashing with memorex. But as long as you’ve gone this far already, go to codeguys site and flash again with his F/W to see if it helps. You can find his site by doing a search or go to the Liteon forum and look him up. But I would stay with the BS41 and leave BSOS alone. I’ve not had any good luck with it. Good luck and welcome to the forum.

I am using TDK 8x +R discs but all of my other burners have no problem burning them at 16x and they also burn the 8x +R Fujifilm disc at 16x and the Lite On only write them at 8x. No the drive seems to be fine and if something does happen to it I dont really care cause as far as I am concerned its trash anyway, Don’t have but a few bucks in it anyway. The TDK’s actually say 8x compatable and higher.

As far as flashing it to memorex it wasnt intentional I got one of the crossflashes from the site and it said along with omnipatcher and after I flashed the drive was reading as a memorex so I assumed that was what it was supposed to do.

Get DVD identifier http://DVD.Identifier.CDfreaks.com ]This will tell you what a disk is capable of burning at or you can get DVD infopro. Do a Google seach for it. It does pretty much the same thing. What other burners do you have? As far as I’ve seen. I have yet to see a firmware for a Liteon 1633 that will bump the burn speed up to 16X for certain medias Like Dee and Liggy’s for the NEC 3500. So I’m not sure where your coming up with the idea that the Litey can burn at 16X unless you have 16X media.

Here is a copy of DVD infopro identifying a FUJI 8X+R. But I’m running LD_V2_Beta4 F/W in my NEC. As you can see it will burn at 12 and 16X max but is 8X media. And here is the same disk only in my Liteon 1633. Note that it can only burn this at 8X max. This has the BS41 F/W in it. So I’m not sure how your getting media to burn at 16X on a Liteon unless it is 16X media.

Ok first of all I think maybe you should read the first post from me in the very begining, It says I have 2 HP DVD WRITERS 630c flashed to BENQ 1620 and they are the ones burning this 8x media at 16x. The Lite-On will not. Anyway basically there isnt a cross flash that can make this drive read an 8x compatable and higher media past 8x. They do have firmware that upgrades drives some upgrade -R speeds and some DL speeds so i was trying to upgrade to get this drive to run half as good as my others. That’s basically all I needed to know. Thanks alot. I will trash the Lite-On and get another HP like the others since I have so much luck with them.

It might not be the smartest thing to trash the drive just yet. Many people buy liteon drives just for thier scanning ability with kprobe. Further, you can speed hack it to burn those disks faster, thier is just a little more to it than changing firmware.
First thing, I’m not sure if you are farmiliar with media codes but they identify the true manufacture and model of the disk. Download the free program sportfish recomended to read the media codes.
I’m not sure if there is any advantage to the memorex firmware but I would search the liteon forum and find out.

There is more to the firmware than burn speed so I would find a modified firmware that provides some write stratagy improvments.
Once you find the firmware you want to run, do not flash to it yet. Download the firmware and run omnipatcher on it.
http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=97590
Omni patcher will allow you to selectivly change the burn speeds for each media code. You could of course enable every burn speed for every media code but if you do, realise that it is not always smart to overspeed your burns. It can cause excess wear and tear on your drive and even damage it. You only want to overspeed good quality media that is burning good overspeeded.
After you modify the firmware with omnipatcher, then flash your drive with it.
Lastly, download kprobe (works with liteon burners only) and scan some of the disks you have burned at higher speeds, both the ones that you burned on the liteon and the ones you burned on your other burners (scan them in the liteon though), to see how good the burn actually is. They may be readable but marginal.

Sorry KIDDSCRIPT… Your right, you did mention the HP’s in the beginning. For give me but I’m coming off of a major back surgery and the pain meds didn’t help last night. So I got 0 sleep. But I certainly wouldn’t trash the Litey. It could come in very handy for testing as the Liteon’s are (at this time) the only drive that you can use KProbe with. This test is very helpful in showing your PI & PIF faults. So you may want to consider getting a Plumax external USB enclosure for around $30.00 that includes shipping from www.dealsonic.com and putting it in that. I have 2. One for my DVD ROM and one for an extra 120ghz Seagate HDD. They work great. You’ve got a decent peice of test equipment that would be a shame to trash. Just a thought for you. By the way, what HP units did you get your drives out of? I have an a250n and a a367c that claimed to have 300i’s in them if I remember right. But low and behold when I put my NEC’s in them, they turned out to be Phillips DVD8301/44’s in both units. Just curious what yours came out of.
