Can't get a good burn even after formatting

Okay I’m not neceserally a newbie but in the same case I dont know everything there is to know so figured this would be a good spot to post…

Heres my problem, I used to be able to burn dvds without any problems, would always verify my discs and only once in a blue moon would one not verify…

Recently I have not been able to burn anything without the verify option failing… Figured ok maybe its just new version of nero or something, put the cd in dvd drive and it would play the beginning ok then get to a point and start clicking and everything becomes jumbled…

This has become an issue on both my computers, laptop and desktop… so I figured okay maybe it has to do with software conflicts… I formatted my Desktop, didn’t install anything and figured ok lets use sonics record now that came installed and surely I should be able to burn… That is not the case, I am still getting errors in the verify process and discs are totally unreadable or unreadable after a certain point…

I have found that the verify seems to usually fail anywhere from around 75% to 99% usually fallin in the 85% range… I have managed to get all of 2 dvds that have verified out of the 30 or so that I have attempted to burn… I’ve ruled out it being bad media because i used a third brand new laptop to burn same files and it verified and works 100% on like 4 different discs…

Hmm kinda funny after writing this little thing, Is it possible that somethings wrong with the ram i installed on each computer? I always thought it was just as simple as pulling one ram out and putting the next ram in… Both seemed to match what system could handle and computer runs just fine in every other aspect… But its the only thing that would seem to make sense as to why after reformatting both computers and attempting to burn that it wouldnt work… Wish I had kept old ram so i could just put that back in and see if it truly is the problem…

Is there a way to check my ram to make sure its 100% compatible?

Am I correct in thinking that Reformatting my computer back to factory conditions I should be able to burn something and verify it 100% seeing how I used to be able to burn media?

Heres a log I made using nero 7.5 showing the errors, I ended up cancelling the verification after a while because I didn’t have the patience for it to go through the rest of the sectors…

It’s certainly possible that bad RAM can cause burn errors. There have been numerous instances here where that’s been the problem.

The other thing is that just because the media burns & verifies on one burner doesn’t mean it’ll be OK on another. So don’t discount the media yet. The way to eliminate media is by trying a quality brand like Verbatim.

#3

All of those “KEY MEDIUM ERRORS” in your log, suggest bad media. Just because it works on one pc, doesn’t mean it’s good media. My NEC drive handles TEON media very well. None of my other drives like it very much. It all boils down to the drive, the firmware, and how they handle various media.

Like the above poster suggests, try GOOD media. Garbage in, garbage out!

#4

:iagree: :iagree:

I agree. Also about the part about some media being fine on one burner, crap on another.

#5

The media is Ritek Data Printable Cds (When i had bought them people considered them to be good media)… The reason I don’t think its the media is not only did it burn just fine on the new laptop that im not having problems with, but before I had problems with my desktop and other laptop, I burned about 30-40 dvds with no problems between each computer, all are still playable with no problems at all (printed on and everything)… I also tried using my memorex media (non printable) that i never had any problems burning with… I’ll go get some verbatim dvds to make sure, but have a feeling I’m going to end up with more coasters…

As far as the RAM goes, I bought kingston ram from best buy, old ram on desktop was pc3200 ddr sdram 512 mb (2, 256) and replaced it with a 1 gig chip that was pc3200 (pretty sure it was pc3200) ddr sdram… laptop i cant remember the specifics, but I know i made sure that everything was the same except for the size of ram (512 upgraded to 1gig)…

Question: How can I rule out if its ram causing the problem or not?

#6

Consider that you might have either bad cable on your writer or IDE controller in your Motherboard is gone bad.

#7

Okay so I went out and bought some verbatim cds, they are 16x dvd+r… I have made 3 cds, all cds have written and verified successfully… So what do you know it was the media after all… Seems like i got a 50 pack of dvds that arn’t even opened to throw out…

I do now have some new questions though…

When I burn in nero with the new verbatim 16x cds, it only allows me to burn at 2.4x, wont let me change the settings… anyone know why this happens??

Also when I put the dvd into my laptop, autorun doesnt come up, and when i go to manually look at the dvd, it shows that theres a dvd in the drive, says how big it is, but open the folder and no files are there… Very odd indeed… Dvds read just fine on my desktop and even in my external burner on my desktop…

I was thinking both these problems could be because burner speed is lower than 16x, for example my desktop is only an 8x burner… but then i looked at laptop and its 24x read write dual layer burner…

Why oh why can’t things just be nice and simple, just when I think my problem is solved something new pops up… grumble…

You’ve used the term CDs when I’m sure you really mean DVDs , it does confuse things when you mix terms like this.

Ritek these days is definitely not the media of choice. Stick with Verbatim & you can’t go too far wrong.

Maybe a new burner would be a good idea for the desktop.

Anyway I hope this helps.
