Can't figure out why Memorex 8x only burns at 4x

#1

i just bought some Memorex 8x from Office Depot but when i tried writing at 8x with Alcohol 120% 1.9.5b2802 (it does show up as being able to write 8x in Alcohol) it said “Illegal speed for this medium” when it actually began burning and burnt it at 4x instead.

my firmware’s 3.04.

is anyone else having this same problem? do i have to update something?

here’s the DVD Identifier dump:

try other software and see if it is software based limitation
check cddvd speed and see what it shows for allowable speeds and create a data disc

#3

The drive is obviously capable of writing them at 8x.
Must be an Alcohol problem…

#4

DVD write speed is controlled by the firmware of the drive

#5

I burn can the TDK and Staples CMCMAGE01 at 8x in my LiteOn 832s and 1633s using Nero and DVD Decrypter.

#6

I can figure it out they are memorex. I learned along time ago with cdrs never buy memorex.

The drive itself find what optimum speed in function of disc…Most of the time drive will try first do the calibration before writing proceed at a maximum speed but ofcourse it will depend on your drive specs but according to you it is capable of doing 8x speed. If the drive for first attempt of power calibration can’t find or failed in determining the optimum power then it will again repeate the procedure but this time at a lower speed.

It might be that your drive failed on the first attempt but find the optimum power at lower speed then start writing. There is also possibility that your drive is not capable of doing 8x writing on the disc and not yet optimize the writing strategy on such speed which is controlled by fw. i suggest to ask the supplier of your drive to update your fw or find a site that you can download latest release fw.

i hope this will help! :iagree:
