Can't burn at 16X?: Please read this first

I bought two 100 count 16X DVD-r cake spindles of TDK. Media info is below. The first half of spindle #1 burned at 16X. Then, starting with one DVD - I could only burn most at 7-9x, a few would go to about 12-13x, the last 90% of the burn time. I tried everything - all kinds of troubleshooting. Wasted tons of time. drivers, system settings, the works.

My friend gave me a few of his memorex branded 16x to try. Media info is below also, interestingly it shows up as a ritek. Perhaps someone can explain that for me. Anyhow - Guess what? It burned at 16x! Once again I could burn a dvd in about 5 minutes instead of 8-9 minutes!

Lesson learned. I thought TDK was pretty good, but even in the SAME spindle, manufacturing can inconsistent. But here comes the kicker:

The first half of the SECOND spindle burns at 16x. Then - the same problem occurs.

Are you thinking the same thing I am? TDK may have known about the manufacturing problem of these dvds. And they put the bad lot at the damn bottom so you wouldn’t go return them. I don’t know. Maybe it’s far-fetched. But I’m steering clear of TDK.

Just thought this would be helpful. If you can’t burn at 16x - do the obvious first - try some other media. I wish I did alot sooner.

Telling us what your writer is would certainly be a helpful thing.

TDK, Memorex, it doesn’t matter about the Brand that is on the cover of your DVD media as you have found out the hard way. The Media ID is the important information here. It looks like your TDK was just an unlucky batch as it’s one of the better DVD media out there according to the below link.
Here’s a link: http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
That will help you choose the best DVD media there is and which ones you should steer clear of; it will also give you the brand of media and which Media ID they use.

I am using Memorex 16x DVD+R media currently and it’s really manufactured by Ricoh and am having no problems yet but mind you, I only bought 10 to try out and not 100.
