I can’t check anything, since I can’t get past the first screen nor did my computer come with a WinXP CD. When I called Compaq, the first person said it hadn’t reached the hard drive, while the second person said it did. I’m still hoping I can just do a re-install. The problem is that the computer didn’t come with any discs.
You can boot to a floppy or CD and check the hard drive. Just download the utility from the maker of the drive and follow the instructions. You may need to change the boot priority in BIOS first. Your PC is trying to boot to Windows on the hard drive, but not finding all the boot files. It’s reading the boot sector (MBR) but not getting much beyond that.
As to whether it’s a virus, it could be so you’d want to also do a complete scan if you get it going again. However, if it is a virus, all your data is gone anyhow.
In any case, absent any sort of restore discs, there’s not much you can do even if you replace the hard drive. Worst case: you need a new hard drive and a Windows CD plus all the drivers for the PC.
If the HDD passes diagnostics, then all you need is the rest of those things.
