Good afternoon, I am getting ready to make a purchase and am looking for the major differences. Which one is a better overall printer. Thanks in advance.

IMO, the iP5000 is better because it used non-chipped ink cartridges. As for print quality and features I don’t think there is much difference between them.

iP5000

Mine is 3 years old and prints better than any other “normal” printer I have seen. Plus, mine prints CDs as well (this option may not be available in the US)

IP5000:

Pro - chip-free ink tanks, readily available and cheap compatible tanks.
Con - older print engine, slower.

IP4500:

Pro - Faster and slightly better print quality.
Con - Chipped ink tanks, compatibles are more expensive.

Both are discontinued models, both can print on CD/DVDs.

First, cost/condition would be a major factor.

I’ve used both and like them equally well.
Maybe I lean a bit more toward iP5000 because of the chipless tanks.

And as weird as it sounds, I like the iP5000 architecture.
It’s the most perfect, simplistic design.
An iP3000 and iP4000 (same frame as iP5000) stacked one on the other make a formidable printing array on this desk.
Yeah, I’m nuts :stuck_out_tongue:

Edit:
A bit off-topic, but today I ran the iP4000 under Linux for the first time !!
Puppy Linux 4.1
A tiny OS at only 98MB but extremely capable with superior hardware recognition and loaded with useful utilities. Loads almost entirely in RAM so it is faster than what you’re used to.

Great support and definitely worth a look.
