Cannot play dual layer after clonedvd2

I have tried two times with two different movies to back up a copy of a movie to a dual layer (memorex dvd+r dl) disk, but afterwards, they will not play on my dvd player or computer! The dvd player tries to read the disk many times, but eventually says that there is no disk inserted. I have a brand new NEC ND-3540A (v1.01) dvd burner with version of anydvd and version of clonedvd2. Does anyone know what could be the problem? Thanks!

I believe your problem is with the media. I don’t know what the media code is for Memorex DL+ media. You will need to identify the media using DVDInfoPro or something simialar to get the manufacturers code. You can download the free version at CD Speed will also work and the latest version 4.01 can be downloaded at the Nero site.

Just yesterday NEC has released the first firmware upgrade for the 3540A, it’s 1.03.

Here’s the thread you can read about the new NEC 1.03 firmware:

Below is the list of what DL+ disks are compatible with the new 1.03 firmware.
If after reading the media code from the Memorex, and it is not included on the list, you can be quite certain it is not included on the 1.01 firmware that you have installed.
Most compatible DL+ disks for DVD DL burners is Verbatim, you should have no problems with that media.

To be on the safe side, don’t forget to set the speed in CloneDVD not to exceed the manufactures limits for that media, although the firmware will still determine the maximum speed it will burn at.

Hope this helps you.

I have the same problem but I’m using Pioneer DVR108 with 1.20 firmware (which is the latest for this model)
I have no problem burning with either DVDdecrypter, or Nero but when I try to play it back it will freezes where the layer switch is. I have to skip to couple chapters passing where the layer switch is to make the disc playable.
So far I have wasted about 4 disc. I never have problem with Memorex single layer media but heard a lot of horror stories about memorex DL media.
No wonder why CompUSA sell them for 29 dollars for a 25 disc cakebox.

There are just as many horror stories about SL Memorex media, avoid them if at all possible since you never know what you’ll get. I’m not saying all Memorex is bad, they do have some media that is acceptable, only problem is they use sveral manufacturers so you’re rolling the dice.

Due to the high cost of DL media I have only burned 1 DL disk, I bought 6 at 2.00 each, tax included, they were Verbatim DL+ and it plays perfectly.
No issues with the layer break.

According to the experienced ones in case of DVD+R DL the best medium is Verbatim, like itzbinnice said. So, one of the solutions to the problem might be changing media to Verbatim.

Last, but not least you have to bear in mind that NOT ALL DVD Players can handle DVD+R DL media, i.e. they are not playable in all standalones (actually firmware dependant).

I never gave that thought much consideration but a very valid point.
In my case, my NEC burner will burn a DL+ disk to DVD Rom by default making it appear as an original. The one I did burn played just fine on my stand alone, but the unit is fairly new and able to play many formats.

I am wondering now if some older players would have difficulty playing the DL disks even though burned DVD Rom simply because the media type is realatively new. I would imagine not since the DVD-Rom format is the same reagardless of what media is used. Any opinions on this?

I’ve had this same problem also. I have a Panasonic Home Theater system Model SA-HT900 and I can’t get my Burned Dual Layer disks to play on this at all. I have a Emerson VHS/DVD Recorder hooked to my TV and it will play the Dual Layer disk perfect, but it’s not hooked to the surround sound system. The DL disks I used was Memorex, I purchased a 3 pack of Verbatim, but I haven’t tried them yet. My Panasonic Home Theater system is only 1 and a half years old and it will play all other formats perfect. It plays DVD+R / DVD-R / DVD-RW / Audio CDs / MP3 disks / Photo Disks. What’s weird is I can put the DL disk in and it will spin up go to the DVD movie menu, when I select Play Movie, or try to select special features the screen goes black and it will spin for abot 20 seconds then stop. But like I said I have only used Memorex DL disks to try so far. I’ll try the Vertabim for something I really want. I’ve had great luck with Vertabim single layer DVD-R and Plus Rs. If anyboby was wondering, to make my DL Disk I use DVD Decrypter in the ISO read mode, make a big ISO and then use Decrypter to burn that ISO onto the DL Disk

@ Viper66,

Perchance have you notice that you are posting in the CloneDVD Forum. You are asking for assistance but nowhere in your posting do you mention the use of the CloneDVD software program. Unfortunately if you are not using the CloneDVD software program this Forum is not the proper Forum to be seeking assistance with other DVD copying software programs.

If you are using the CloneDVD software program please state what versions you are using. To ensure you are using the most recent up to date version visit SlySoft ( and download the latest version. Also suggest downloading the latest version of AnyDVD. The AnyDVD-CloneDVD software combination produces excellent results.

Below is a Forum link for the AnyDVD-CloneDVD User Tutorial, which provides detail information on the use of these programs.

It is noted that you make reference to using Memorex DL DVD Media. There have been numerous reports that this particular DVD Media does not perform well. By all reports Verbatim DL DVD Media produces good results.

Best Regards,

I’m sorry if I forgot to mention it, but I was also going to say that I couldn’t get my DL Memorex disks to play in my Home Theater system after using DVDDecrypter OR CloneDVD2. I was just trying to comment on my experience after reading what everyone else was saying. I use Clone DVD2 V2.8.5.1 / AnyDVD V5.4.4.1 all the latest release versions, and the last V of Decrypter. I have no trouble creating or burning any Single Layer or Dual Layer disks, I just can’t get the DL to play in my HTS using any program.

@ itzbinnice:
Sorry for the late answer. I don’t know. I have not experineced too much with DL media. Maybe in the future. I think, it is still much more efficient to use a SL disc.

@ viper66:
Please, try the Verbatim and with CloneDVD2. I am interested in the result, whether your Panasonic could read it. It has to, but as I have mentioned not all players can handle recorded DL media (well… firmware).
