I just tried burning a CD-R on a new box (Acer power FG, XPPro SP2) and it looks like I have a readonly CD: SmartBurn starts up with an empty list, and device manager only mentions "cdrom" in the service details for the device.
I downloaded the specs from lite-on to make sure they mention "CD-R", which is my current task. I've tried to get a new driver and change the firmware (from Acer's FRS3 to FS0D using LtnFW/FlashFix) to no avail. OmniPatcher does not let me set CD+/-RW properties, only DVD. The BIOS tags it CD/DVD ROM, on its own as third IDE master. So can it burn that CD or not?
Eventually, I found that notice at
that appears even more desultory than a third IDE. Is it that? (What is that?)
