OK from looking around on this site and reading plenty of posts I have changed my browser to firefox, downloaded avast AV software, spybot and ad-aware. I was getting spammed through Messenger Service which I have now disabled, but when finding info on this in MS I have realised I have no firewall software installed. I used to have Norton Suite but ditched this in favour of the above. Was going to download ZoneAlarm but apparently this doesn't support Firefox, so to cut a long question short what would you guys recommend I install (freeware if possible).
Horses for courses you will get a number of recommendations. I use McAfee, paid for or you can get it ocassionally on PC mags for free, and have done for over 2 years now with no problem. You can turn on XPs own firewall as a temp measure, nut it only deals with incoming connections it does not stop outgoing.
I've always been a big fan of ZoneAlarm's free personal version. I wouldn't be on the net without it.
ZA isn't an option as the original poster has already stated in their post.
I use Windows Firewall on My Desktop & McAfee (paid for) on my laptop - I have done this for the last 6 months and there is no difference to me - One thing u could do is use ewido regularly - (does the same job as adaware & spybot combined from what I can see) and the paid for version is apparently even better. Also make sure u have a half decent Antivirus Prog - Avast or Adaware should do the job for free - (Don't pay for what u don't have to - life is expensive enough).
It has been shown that the free ones don't do as good a job as the paid ones, and have a poorer detection rate.
ZoneAlarm supports FireFox (and other browsers).

How has it been shown - I stay online 24/7 and with windows firewal and half decent antivirus & antispyware software I feel safe - actually now I think about it you are scaring me - how much did u pay for your foolproof protection and how many times has it saved you ? Pls tell me - I am interested to know as the only paid for firewall I have tried has beenMcAfee and (sorry guys no slander/liable inteneded) but is was rubbish Chiefy
Another vote for Zone Alarm here. I used the free version with absolutely no problems or compatiblity issues with IE, any of the Mozilla apps or Opera. Have since upgraded to their suite which includes anti-virus, spyware, IM protection etc. etc.. Less bloat than any of the other 'all in one' solutions I've tried and would recommend without reservation.
zone alarm works great for me and I am at this moment using zonealarm. I use only zone alarm suite now since after using norton for years I got tired of it having to many things running in the background. Switched to only zone alarm firewall, antivirus, and anti spyware three months ago and would never switch back to norton.
Sygate's Firewalls are really nice, i think it's not more developed since symantec bought sygate.
Been using Zone Alarm ( freebie ) and Firefox for a long time ( since the fox came out ) .. there have been no conflicts with any version .. presently running F/fox 1.50.1 and ZA 6.1.737.00 , rumor must have been started by a IE fan Lol
How skipping the software part and buying a Hardwall Firewall/Router they are not that expensive.
No problems using ZoneAlarm (free version) and IE. Haven't had any viruses, spyware or adware on my computers in over a year. Also currently using EZ Trust Anti-Virus (one year free subscribtion with a new copy of WindowsXP, can be used with an older copy of WindowsXP as long as you haven't used it before).
fraz1975I have used windows XP firewall as well as my routers firewall together with AVG for about 12 months. No problems.I used ZA before that with a lot of problems and conflicts. I have tried avast as well but prefer avg free because its more user friendly for me.I guess it depends on what sort of sites you are visiting.
Add another vote for Zone Alarm and for Sygate. I have used both for my computer and the only difference between the two that I can see is that Zone Alarm seems a bit easier to pick up and use right away while Sygate has a slight learning curve.
From personal use I can recommend Zone Alarm(free) and Mcafee. I had no problems with either of them. Both in my book are excelent :iagree:
sorry, don't trust it, it's one of the first things i do is to turn it off. how do you know something isn't phoning home if it doesn't stop outgoing traffic
ZA pro is what i use, and up to my knowledge i've not had any problems
Agree with bjproc.Latest ZA/ZAP phoned home for some unknown reason, but aside from that it's good enough for me.
Mcafee was way too annoying for me. Popping crap up every couple of minutes, when I had already taught it all the internet accessible programs that I use, it kept asking for permission for those same ones, over and over. Zone Alarm all the way for me!
