Can read DVD's but not CD's

I’m new to this forum so I hope this is the correct place to post.!!

I have a Dell Dimention 2400 desktop with a HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4481B combo drive (DVD ROM / CD RW). I was burning some music to cd yesterday when it bombed out half way through. Now it won’t recognise ANY cd’s at all. Strange thing is though that it will still play DVD’s!
Do you reckon it’s a H/W or S/W problem? I’m not that technical.
Any suggestions as to what the problem could be?

Hi and Welcome!

the easiest way to rule out software problems would be to boot your computer from the drive using a bootable CD (Live Linux, Ultimate Boot CD, Windows install CD, etc.). You may need to adjust the boot priority in your Bios setup accordingly.

In case, this fails, then probably the drive is faulty.

Thanks for the suggestion. I will try it this evening.
