This issue is very common when using low quality discs. One of the main "side-effects" of low quality media is indeed that the burner used to write them is not able to read data.
Using a proven quality disc like Verbatim or Taiyo Yuden should solve.
If you are already using quality discs, then a possible cause is the drive itself. Maybe it needs a lens cleaning to remove dust on optical pickup.
BTW, Sony 170 is not a very recent drive, and maybe it is already at the end of its working life. The only solution, in this case, is a new drive.
