Can burn cd-r but can't read, can't burn cd-rw at all

Hi all:

Have a good one for y’all to tackle. I can burn a cd-r, but can’t read that cd right afterwards on the exact same drive. I’ll put the cd back into the drive and in Explorer, it will indicate that there is no disk in the drive or that the cd is empty. But other drives can read the disk just fine! I’ve tried finalizing and burning multi-session cd’s with the same result. As for cd-rw, I can’t even erase it much less write to it.

Now get this, paid $50 for a tech to look at it and he ‘says’ that in using his diagnostic software in Windows, he can burn and read cd’s just fine. I’m not sure if I believe him.

I’ve tried to burn just after reinstalling from OEM emergency boot cd’s and oem software (roxio 5) but no deal; have tried nero 6 and nero 7 but am having the same problem.

Am running:
-internal MATSUSHITA UJDA710
-Am using excellent quality verbatim cd-r and cd-rw. I’ve also tried imation and hp media too
-XP Home with all the security patches
-Toshiba Satellite 5000 X1Z P3 1.1 ghz
-512meg ram
-40gig drive
-no virus problems or space issues

Anyone give me a hand?

Burn a CD, with verify and then post the results here.

Thanks for the reply. I’ve pasted the log from Nero 7 below as well as attached it to this thread. Hope this helps figure out a solution. Thanks again.

That media recognition problem comes mostly from disabled Auto-Insert-Notification and interfering softwares (eg CloneCD, Alcohol) and their virtual drives.

The log looks good, writing & verify successfully.

You should however update Nero and not use Multisession if possible (at least for DVD).

That’s the strange thing. This is right after I’ve done a fresh reinstall with my manufacturer emergency boot cd’s. The same thing will happen with my oem cd burning software (roxio 5 basic).

I don’t have any other interfering software that I am aware of. How do I go about changing the auto-insert-notification?

I’ve just tried to erase a cd-rw and the error message I receive is: “Power Calibration Error”. In trying to write to a cd-rw, I get a “burn process failed.” I’ve included the log file below.

What software would you recommend aside from Nero and Roxio?

Format RWs using DVDInfoPro.
Matshita drives have a sucking support, especially for media.
Because of that, make sure you only use high-quality and recommended media!

I’ve been using Verbatim 8-12x CD-RW recently and I’m very pleased with them. Likewise for CD-R it’s Verbatim Pastels or Super AZO that I’ve found to be the best.

Been using Verbatim 8x cd-r’s as well. When those run out, I’m going to use Maxell’s since I’ve been reading good things about them. Any other tips about the hardware problem? I’m going to try and vacuum the sucker out and see if that helps. I keep the area around the laptop fairly clean though.
