Hi. My First posting in this forum. I read many postings, but still confused. I've been recording on a 2004 ILO with hard drive successfully since it came on the market. The original burner was lousy, skipping, freezing, etc. Later I learned how to replace the burner and found a slightly used one that was compatible. It worked much better and enabled the ability to buy 16x + DVDs. Downside is that it only likes Memorex.
I just purchased 100-pak Memorex 16x and the burner went out. It won't finalize. Tried reinstalling firmware, but i guess it is time to replace the burner again. Since newer ones aren't compatible, I have to again buy an older used model and hope it works.
So I am researching buying an external drive for my HP notebook (Pavillion 5000, 64 Turion) because my desktop is too old with less memory and is XP SP1. I see from comments that external writers don't work as well instead of using an internal on a desktop.
I want to be able to burn my 100 Memorex 16x plus media since I'm already out the money and also be able burn DVD- media since our family members can't play plus on their old DVD players.
So, please give me advise on what writer to buy and if an external burner for my notebook is a mistake.
One more thing. I see a lot of external writers that are 8x. Some people say 16x disks won't work on an 8x writer and some say they will.
Sorry for the long post. Hope you can un-confuse me.
