BUSlink CD-RW Drive

Hello, My BUSlink CD-RW drive was bought in 2001 from Best Buy. I believe it’s manufactured by Lite-On Technologies, since how it displays as Lite-On when my computer boots up.

THE PROBLEM:

I can’t get the burner to work as a burner. It displays in My Computer as a CD Drive, and also in my Device Manager. The model number is RW1640 and the Lite-On model number is LTR 16102B. It’s a 16x CD-R, 10x CD-RW, 40x Read.

Brand new this thing cost me $99.00. I’ve only been able to use this thing a few times, and that was when I had the bundled Nero Software installed. Since then, I’ve transferred the CD-Rom to another computer, and fatefully, lost the originally bundled software.

MY QUESTIONS:
How do I get this CD-ROM to read as a CD-RW?
Is it a matter of having the right driver?

I’ve contacted BUSlink by email, and they’ve sent me Roxio Easy CD Creator 6 and a Nero disc on 2 occasions. Both times they’ve told me that the CD’s had the drivers on it and problem was solved. They were incorrect.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

What happens when you try to burn a CD?

Using Windows XP- it tells me that it was unable to burn. Burn Process failed or something like that, but it also renders the disk useless after that.

Using Nero- it goes through the whole process, but doesn’t burn. Burn Process Failed as well, and renders the disk useless. What’s messed up is that for the primary burn drive, it lists my Lite-On. That’s the only place on my computer where the drive is recognized as a burner. Shame it doesn’t burn.

You shouldn’t need any special drivers. The fact that it says cd-rom in explorer doesn’t mean anything. Do you get any error message when Nero fails like “Power Calibration Error”. What type of disc and files are you trying to burn?

After re-installing Nero 5.5, and after installing the R160SOK firmware(acting on my own), I get the window to Choose Recorder. It lists my virtual cd drive from the Alcohol 120% and my Lite-On LTR 16102B, which is covered by a red circle with a line going through it. The drive properties in this window are as follows.

Medium Types: CD-R/CD-RW
Maximum Speed: 16x (2,400 KB/s) Disc-At-Once: CueSheet, DAO/96
Firmware Revision: 0SOK (I believe may be a different geographical region)
Overburn: Supported
Buffer underrun protection: Smart-Burn Recorder Buffer: 2048 KB

Great, when I choose the burner as my recorder device, I get a pop up that says “Sorry this version of nero can only be used with the recorder it was bundled with” I am sure this is due to the firmware I installed recently. Any idea how to un-install the firmware?

Before, when I could use Nero, I never got the error message " Power calibration error"

thanks for your help by the way

You need to contact Buslink to get the correct key for Nero. That should unlock the drive in Nero. The firmware is unrelated to this issue.

Right on, I did contact them by email and this is what they said.

My email to buslink.

I can’t be any clearer than this.

Their reply.

Hello,
Any full version will work with the drive. But the OEM that is not
working for you has an ID tag on it. A full version does not look for
the ID of the drive.

Does that make some sense? The full version of Nero 5.5 that they sent to me, does not let me choose the LTR 16102B as my recorder. I get that error message that says “Sorry this version of nero can only be used with the recorder it was bundled with”.

Should I skip Nero alltogether, and use Roxio ECDCreator 6.1? It has BUSLINK written all over the disk, and I remember it not working with that software either. I’ll install it anyway, and post the error message that comes afterward.

Thanks a lot for your help.

Alright, well Roxio was incommunicado after installing, meaning it would not open, despite the successful install. But one good thing happened. In my computer and control panel’s device manager, the cd rom is now labeled CD-RW. Not much of a success but, hey. I got a friend to come over and install a different version of Nero, called Nero Smart Start. This one installed with no problems and even recognizes my drive as a CD-RW.

Upon setting up a multisession disk (a data cd-rom), I get the impression that it’s working. But it isn’t. In the Time and Event Tables, I get the following messages.

Caching of files completed.
Burn process started at 16x (2,400 KB/s)
LITE-ON LTR-16102B --Write error
Invalid write state

could not perform EndTrack
Session fixation error
Could not perform Fixation
Session fixation error

Burn process failed at 16x(2,400 KB/s)

That’s all, I haven’t the clue what to do, but I am sure it’s almost in working order. Thanks again for all your help.

here is the actual log file. Also, I am using Maxell 80 minute 700MB silver disks. They were $10.00 for a spindle of 50 from Guitar Center. I guess they are pretty darn cheap b/c I can’t even get my cd drive to recognize any of them. Even discs that already have data on them, I cannot access them. Well here is the actual log file…

I had a similar problem with and I/O Magic Drive. I threw out the disc by accident. I emailed them, they gave me a new key and I downloaded latest version from Nero. I guess every company is different. Try burning a new audio or data cd. I think “Session fixation error” has do with multisession and whether the disc is closed or not. Could also try a different brand of media. Sometimes a drive won’t like a particular CD.

Have any suggestions on what brand of disc to buy?
Something that is pretty much universal. Thanks a lot!

If you the best Taiyo Yuden is the way to go. They are made in Japan and are very good quality. You can get them here:

http://www.accaproducts.com/taiyyudcdr80.html

Word, I’ll get some in a few days. I’ll post my results as soon as I can. Also, what can I do to make sure I am going about the burning process correctly? Do I need to check Finalize after burning? or Disc/Track at once?

If you want, you can have Nero verify the disc after burning. Its a checkbox on the lower left while burning. If you want your cd to play in cd players, you are going to have to finalize the disc as most cd players don’t recognize multisession discs. Now that you got the key thing figured, I don’t think you are going to have many problems.

I’m having similar problems with a Buslink drive which is detected as a LITE-ON LTR-12102B (or something like that), I had this working in my old computer after having quite a lot of difficulty installing it, the problem is I don’t remember how I got it to work last time. It came with Adaptec Easy CD and I think I installed that and after it caused me even more trouble it somehow installed the driver for the drive, I’ve tried installing this on the new computer but it still won’t work. I’m trying to use the drive with Nero 6 on Windows ME which gives some error message about ASPI and just won’t detect the drive, only gives me the option for virtual drive.

I’ve looked on the internet for drivers but they’re all firmware and I don’t understand all of this firmware stuff…what happened to just using normal drivers like I’ve always done?
