Burning Software

Can anyone recommend a good burning program that doesn’t flake out with Vista? I had Nero5 and 6 and 7 with XP and it worked fine. I bought a new computer and it had Vista on it and they told me not to down grade back to XP because it’s screw my computer up(die hard xp fan), anyways Nero 7 worked good for a while but it seems like after the latest update from Windows Nero had been flaking out. I uninstalled it and reinstalled and got a message saying it’s not compatible with my version of Windows. I got Nero 8 now and it’s a huge mess and hasn’t done good since I installed it. I’ve read up on 9 and have heard it’s more buggy than 8 so is there anything else out there that can burn as good as nero with out the BS I get with it?

Try ImgBurn. It’s free and much better than Nero.
As for Nero. They used to have uninstaller for versions starting from ver7.
Use that to get rid of it. It cannot be uninstalled any other way, short of reformatting hard drive.
I know they had an update for 7 to Vista and their latest version was fairly stable. I still use ver7 for some parts, but I have WinXP.

Okay-- I tried this and it doesn’t work either. I keep getting a write error everytime. And my version of Nero 7 is no longer compatible with Vista after the last update. That’s when anything to do with my driver stopped working right. I’ve used the clean tool, I’ve done the reg cleaner, I’ve gotten everything nero off and when I tried to reinstall, I got a not compatible message so I didn’t even bother to install.

Could you post a log file of your failed burn with ImgBurn? The location should be here: C:\Documents and Settings*User Name*\Application Data\ImgBurn\Log Files

Of course, insert your user name in the area where I have User Name

You might also check the DMA status of your drive if it is an IDE interface drive: http://club.cdfreaks.com/f61/troubleshooting-enabling-checking-dma-windows-vista-xp-2000-me-9x-101616/

since the question was pretty much already answered ill just add a little to it…

i use Vista SP1 myself and been using ImgBurn for a while now… it’s pretty much perfect and it’s burning software you can count on.

bottom line = ImgBurn for DATA and Burrrn for AUDIO

Okay-- I figured out imgburn and why it wasn’t working. I thought it was software to burn DVD movies that will play in my DVD player, not just my computer. I realized this when I started trying to use it. I guess I should’ve stated that but at this point I’m so burned out on trying to solve this problem.

I did check status of DMA and everything that had the option was already ticked for enable DMA. I’ve done a little more research and I think it’s got something to do with my driver. hl-dt-st- dvdram-gsa-t20n ata device. As previously mentioned, I’ve started having problems since I last updated. None before that and I’ve been backing up all my movies with the same programs since I got this computer almost a year ago.

I found this link http://www.fixya.com/support/t1157666-hl_dt_st_dvdram_gsa_t20n_ata_device-- but I don’t know anything about any registry keys and not sure exactly if that is what is wrong and have no clue to find out if that is a possiblity or even if that is the problem, how I go about fixing it b/c when i checked the reg I did find the numbers and some of them had what he mentioned and some didn’t and it wouldn’t let me check properties so I just left it alone. Don’t want anymore of a headache than what it already is.

Sorry to hear you’re tearing your hair out with this.
First off, as CDuncle stated, Img IS for burning movies that will play in your standalone players as well as your pc.

If you could please post a couple of Img burn logs, this will give us quite a bit of info so we can help nail this down for you.
Just follow the file path that Kerry56 posted above.

The link you posted was broken, but I suspect this has to do with deleting the upper and lower filters.
Here is a link to Micrsosoft for deleting the upper and lower filters in XP.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/314060

I’ve read that this works for Vista also, but I can’t confirm that…maybe a Vista user here can answer that
In any case, MS should have that info for you.

As suggested above, I’d definitely get rid of nero.

It won’t convert AVI files etc though so if you want a DVD Video disc you must provide it with DVD Video files - i.e. a VIDEO_TS folder with IFO/BUP/VOB files in it.

This is the one I have. It didn’t save the one that ended with the write error message that wouldn’t complete the disk. This is the same file that was used with the first try, first error msg. I’ve done one more and it seems to be working okay with no more error msgs.
