Philippine officials destroy pirated CDs

Asia is still one of the continents that suffers from high piracy levels. And in order to not hurt international relations with countries that produce software and entertainment (USA, Europe), The Philippines have recently traced and destroyed dozens of pirated CDs.

Current laws punish video and music piracy with a fine of 10,000 pesos (dlrs 200) and a maximum prison term of only one year, said Carlo Uminga, the videogram board's legal counsel.

Four steamrollers ran over the CDs, laid out over an area of 60 by 30 meters (yards) on a pavement at the national police headquarters.

Arroyo and other officials, along with several local singers and movie actors, walked over the debris.

The 2 million CDs were seized in three days of police raids on 50 sidewalk stalls and shops in metropolitan Manila this month. Another 1.7 million pirated CDs worth 85 million pesos (dlrs 1.7 million) are awaiting a court order for destruction, officials said.
