Burning problems, on top of drive disappearing

Hi All.
I had been reading up on this forum for some time now trying to solve my problem, but no luck so far.
I upgraded my system, and got a samsung SH-S203D , sata.
I read the reviews here, and it seems this is a great burner.

But there is something wrong in my computer.
The burner keeps disappearing out of my system, that is, the drive would not appear on windows explorer after a time, or on Nero.
When that happened it wouldn’t even appear on BIOS.
A temporary solution was to change the sata slot it was on, and it would reappear.
I searched for upper/lower filters in regedit, but there were none.

This time I assigned a drive letter to the dvd burner, hoping it will solve that problem.

And I tried burning a dvd , but it failed twice, in Nero and Power Iso.
It looks like I cant burn a dvd :(.
Dvds are taiyo yuden, but its the first time I have tried then.

I am stumped, please help.

im not sure as to exact problem… but i heard (from this forum) older mobo’s with earlier SATA stuff might not like SATA dvd burners. (or basically anything thats not hard drive related)

but assuming that aint the problem… try using a program called ImgBurn (it’s free and everyone uses it on this forum just about) to burn your data discs and see what happens then cause that app should support that burner without any trouble… cause the older versions of nero might not support that burner.

but atleast your using top quality discs

p.s. on a side note… from what i read on these forums it seems like the Samsung 203B SATA burner is generally considered better

Ah, yes, I didnt put my config.Sorry about that.I saw that I did not put even my SO right away, but couldn’t edit.

I use Win XP SP2.
My system is a C2D on a P35 MSI motherboard , MSI P35 Neo.
Also, I have 2 Gb ram.
I tried to buy the 203B version, but couldn’t find it to buy around here.Actually I did find one unit, but it had a white panel
But my system is recent, this shouldnt be a problem with older sata controller.I might be wrong though :frowning:

Anyway, I thought I solved the disappearing act of my drive, but it keeps happening.

I played Company of Heroes for a while, and the drive letter for the burner returned to what it was. After that it disappeared and I had to change the cable again to another sata port before it would appear.
I read that this game uses Securom , so it might be related.
Got rid of the game now, but I hope I dont have to reinstall the SO to solve it.

I will try ImgBurn, thanks.

I reformatted and reinstalled the SO, and tried ImgBurn.
But no luck :(.ImgBurn also fails on burning.

Have you checked with MSI for updated chipset drivers for your board? Or flashed to the latest bios? You might also try a different sata cable.

If the drive keeps disappearing, you may have a flaky sata controller on that board.

#6

I thinking the same need to update the chipset drivers and there may be a SATA Controller too this may or may not be on their website. I had issues as well but not like yours then I found that I needed SATA Controller driver updated and all went well after that.

#7

Thanks for the replies.

I tried another driver for the chipset, and right after that the drive disappeared again :frowning:
I have just flashed the BIOS, and changed the sata port again too make it reappear.
This time a pop up in windows appeared saying the burner was a new hardware found.
I will try another burn, hope it goes well

#8

I flashed bios and updated the drivers for the chipset, and it looks like it worked.Had some problems at first, with the flash that reset my cmos ( of course! ) and the driver made the dvd disappear.

My mobo has two sata controlers. The ICH9 is still problematic, even now.But the other one seems stable.Burnt a couple of DVDs and did not get a error.

Thanks for the help!

PS - It took about 5 minutes to burn 4.3Gb on a TY 16x.
Is it slow or thats about it?

Anyway, at least I can burn them again

#9

I 12:22:08 Write Speed: MAX

Is not always a good idea.
5min for 16x is fast enough.

#10

A good general rule is to burn at half the speed the media is made for for a more lasting burn. It’s just a general rule a lot of people burn faster and have no problems.

I was wondering about that, using 8x.It will take about 9-10 mins.
But if it will last more its no problem.
But I am all in favor of durability
