Burning dvds and 'communication failure'-cause and remedy?

Can someone kindly tell me what it means when I get the message ‘communication failure’ while trying to backup onto /burn my dvd?

i)When burning my new folder and file structure I received ‘communication error’ in relation to burning
1 folder, then considerably later it was ‘communication failure’ in relation to 1 other;

ii) In between these, I successfully burnt numerous individual sub-folders until I ran out of space in the centre section of Nero software (5.5.10.35) where you drop and drag the data to be burned;

iii)When I ran out of space, I deleted the sub-folders (hoping against hope) from the burned dvd and tried to burn the major folders - here I got ‘communication failure’ again, and stopped.

iv) Other earlier problems with Joliet name lengths or undifferentiated names had been resolved by ‘zipping’ affected folders.

Prior to this, I backed up onto the same DVD RW disc 4 times over the past 5 months. When this seemed to no longer work, I bought a brand spanking new Sony DVD-RW disc (1x-4x compatible) . I have done all the above while using the new Sony disc. After reading the FAQ, I defragmented my C drive and tried burning again – but again got the Asus DRW 1612BL ‘communication failure’ message.

MY OS is Win 2000 NT. I have an Asus DRW 1612BL burner.

Anyone able to give some guidance/ideas on cause and remedy?

Thanks,

ATP-1

Nero 5.5 is way outdated and cannot properly deal with 4x DVD-RW…

Hmmm.

Do I understand that this is what the ‘communication error’ and ‘communication failure’ messages indicate eg. problems with software and type of dvd?

Then you think that there is no problem with my dvd burner?

Thanks,

ATP-1

Welcome to CDF!

Please can you post a full Nero error log so we can see what’s going on during the burn?

Remove your serial number from the beginning of the log first, though.

Edit: I would agree with chef that your Nero could use updating. :iagree:

Do I feel like a babe in the woods.

Hmmm…how do I get the full Nero log?

Is it stored in my hard drive someplace that is readily accessible? Or do I have to do another ‘run’ and then when the software asks me whether I want a log print, then I select ‘yes’?

Thanks.

You should find it under “C:\Program Files\Ahead\Nero” > NeroHistory.log …

Is the log generated automatically? I have had a look in the recommended place in my C drive, and wasn’t able to find that particular file. Could it be under some other name… or perhaps some other place?

Thanks.

You may have to sacrifice another disc (sorry!), wait for the burn to fail, then answer accordingly when Nero asks if you’d like to save the error log:

Say yes, save the log to your desktop, open it up (it’s a txt file), remove your serial number from the beginning, and post it.

Here’s the error log-

Disable Multisession on DVD!

Also uninstall Alcohol, you already have nero imagedrive installed.

Hmmm.

Is my case not a multisession? I am trying to add large folders (inclusive of sub-folders), one at a time. I will see how it goes.

Thanks.

I examined a number of variations re. disabling multisessions on the DVD-appears that the only way I could do this was by creating a new compilation. Unfortunately, at around 30% of dvd burned, received the Asus DRW ‘communication failure’ message.

Would Nero 6.6.1.6f (InCD) help? I have read elsewhere that this version (?) does cause quite a few problems though. Is this correct?

Thanks.

You could try with Nero 6.6.x but I would remove incd in any case.

also you may update the firmware of your drive and replace the ide cable.

I have updated to Nero version 7.2. A number of the sub-folders that seemed to be implicated, I placed in a zip file. I attempted a large file backup and was again unsuccessful. This time I received the following message:

DMA driver error, CRC error, H:Asus DRW 1612BL. I provide the log-

REPLACE the ide cable!

At the suggestion earlier in the thread here, I thought that I might try again with some new discs. I purchased a Maxell CD-RW (4x-10x) and Sony DVD-RW (1x-2x). Didn’t realise the mistake with the CD until I got home. (oops). Tried again with the CD, got the error message again - “logical unit not ready” and “could not perform fixation”.

Will try again with the DVD and see what happens- will let you know.

Thanks.

Well, the situation has been resolved. This is what was done:

1/ Had to remove the ‘old’ DMA driver, and find and install a new one.
2/ Had to update to the 1.10 version of Asus DRW 1612BL firmware.
3/ Removed Nero 7.2 and any other traces of Nero.
4/ Replaced this with the 25MB Ashampoo Burning Studio.

Removing and replacing drivers is over my head. So, had someone professional come and help. Took my friend around 2-3 hours. (He also added a couple of other nice software as well). My friend has used Nero 7.2 for around a year or so, and hasn’t had any problems. But, he liked Ashampoo, and said that he would download it for his own use. If only because it uses far less resources than Nero does.

Thanks again.
