Burning at 4x instead of 8x

I’m using Easy Media Creator 9 and when I burn a DVD, my write speeds are at 4x instead of the max 8x. I’m using Memorex 16x DVD+R with compatible speeds of all other lower speeds. My DVD drive is a MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-850S. Firmware is 1.21. OS is Windows XP Media Center 2005. I need help here please!!!

IF that’s an old drive it probably doesn’t have the write strategy for your 16x media. If it’s an 8x drive I suppose it wouldn’t. In that case you ought to be using 8x media or get a new drive.

Welcome to CD Freaks.

You might want to check your DMA status as that can restrict burn speeds to 4x if in the wrong mode.

However, the Memorex 16x media is probably not properly recognised by the burner so defaults to 4x and I don’t think there are many firmware updates to overcome this problem. Memorex is not a recommended media & you’d do far better with Verbatim.

Hi Coolanm60000, welcome to CDFreaks!

The Matshita DVD-RAM UJ-850S is a laptop drive and since it’s newer than my UJ-840S drive, I’m sure it also has write strategies for the most popular 16x rated DVD media.

I agree with TimC that the firmware in the drive probably doesn’t recognize the media, and burns it at a default 4x speed. My UJ-840S uses 2.4x as the default speed for DVD+R media it doesn’t recognize, however.

You could try some other more widely compatible 16x rated media such as Verbatim if burning at 8x is important to you.

I ran a test on Nero and in Disk Info, Write Strategies shows 4x. That means that the drive doesn’t recognize the disc right? Also I’m in question whether the Verbatim can run on my DVD player:

Your drive has recognized the disc and can write it at speeds 2.4x, 4x, 6x and 8x. There’s a 4x write strategy on the disc for those DVD burners who want to use that strategy.

Also I’m in question whether the Verbatim can run on my DVD player:
That depends on whether your DVD player can play DVD+R media that is NOT bitset to booktype DVD-ROM (the Matshita drives don’t bitset DVD+R Single Layer media).
