Burner failing on "Lead-In"

Just purchassed a Dynex DvDrw and so far have only been able to make 1 successfull DvD and it was a very small file. Whenever I try to burn anything else to a DvD it gets to the part where is its writing the “Lead-in” And it sticks at 4% for a minute or 2 then tells me there was an error.
Here is a log file I got from one of the failed attempts.

Ive tried switching over to an 80 wire IDE cable but that did nothing. Ive read some stuff about the DMA needing to be enabled in BIOS but can’t seem to find where I am suposed to do that. Anyone know what could be going wrong here? Or anything I might try that could fix it?

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) in most cases indicates poor media OR the drive “dislikes” the media, for whatever reason. try updating firmware, try different media brand, try -R or +R depending on what you are trying now of course

see my troubleshooter for more tips if you want

updated firmware, and went out and grabed some different brands of blank dvds. Got a successful burn on a memorex dvd-r then put it back in the drive to try to read it to ensure it worked. Computer started to freeze eventually I had to restart. Then the computer was not even recognizing the drive anymore, so I do hardware check it finds it and now will not realize that there is a disc in it no matter what the disk is. After I rebooted and got it to recognize the drive again I tried burning onto a memorex dvd+r it got to 94% then stalled out and failed, and after that is when it now no longer realizes there is a disc in it.

First Problem:
CdRomPeripheral : CREATIVE CD5233E-N atapi Port 1 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : DVDRW IDE 16X atapi Port 1 ID 1 DMA: Off

Translation of Errors:

  1. INVALID FIELD IN CDB
  2. WRITE ERROR
  3. WRITE ERROR

Try enabling DMA before Anything else. Invalid field in CDB suggests it hates the media. From the next freezing up post earlier, could be as severe as a bung Drive but I wont Speculate.

Yup finally got the DMA turned on, but now the drive just won’t read any disc I put in it, but it is still recognized as a drive

Edit: I just uninstalled and unpluged the drive then set it back up like I was puting it in new. Rrinstalled it still not reading anything =x So I think whatever happened during that system freezing or failing the write on the memorex dvd+r may have seriously messed up the read head. Looks like I’ll end up back at the store begging for a replacement.

CD/DVD Drives dont have read heads as such, they use an optical laser. By the way have you got the drives Master/Slave set up? What IDE Channel are they on?

CD-rom is master, dvd burner is slave. And they are on the secondary IDE, with an 80 wire cable. But the issue now is that it was atleast reading disc’s and is now not. And the only thing that changed is that I burned off a dvd-r then tried to read it and that froze the computer. I then rebooted and burned onto a dvd+r which made it to 94% and since that it hasn’t recognized that it has a disc in it no matter what it is I put in.

I went and got the drive exchanged today and the new ones works beatifully. Although now Ive noticed that when I burn things off and have them transcoded so that I can watch them on a DvD player the audio is a little bit ahead of the video. Im using nero to do the entire burning proccess…Any else ever had this issue and know a way to fix it?
