Burn speed (Sony DW-D56A)

[qanda]This thread is about the Sony DW-D56A. Click here to see full specs[/qanda]Is there away to turn our dma on nero as well as on our drive? If so, how do you do this? I had this problem before and I don’t remember how I fixed it,but… My burn time has went from about one and a half hours to 6 hours. When the burn is complete, it say it was successful… however when i play it, it freezes and pixelates? I tried everything from reinstalling my drivers to reinstalling nero with general clean tool to no avail. Any help would be greatly appreciated…

Check in my signature: there is a link about DMA

First of all, thank you for your reply. I put a thread on afterdawn about 3 months ago to no avail. Can you be more specific on the dma? I already reset my drivers to dma not pio and restarted my pc. When i try to burn and run into the same problem, I recheck my primary and secondary drivers and they are still on dma. I am using nero recode when this occurs. Again any help would be greatly appreciated…

Try to run a simple test: run cd-dvd speed, insert a disc in the drive (any disc is fine, except for a blank media), and then go to menu “Run Test” --> “Burst Rate”. Can you post here the result?

Can you provide some more information? What computer do you have? What operative system?

Did you install some new software (or update) when the problem appeared?

If your HDD is almost full this can slow the HDD performance. Also a defrag can be helpful to improve HDD performance.

If I understood correctly, you are using Nero Recode to convert an AVI into DVD, right? Then it is normal that it is necessary a long time to complete the task, because it involves the complete re-encoding of the entire movie.

Try to save the converted movie on hard disk first, and then burn the files later using nero or another software, but not “nero vision”.

Here is my burn log, I apologize… I should of done this before. Anyways, I keep my HDD above 50% free or about. I defrag quarterly, unless i have added/removed large files in a short time. Also I noticed this problem after i downloaded windows updates about 4 months ago. I heard that there were some problems with this update? I have been using dvdfab to rip and i like using recode b/c it shrinks and burns. I know since it does this, it will take longer to make the movie, however I was burning in about half the time before I ran into this problem. Also when it is done, it states a complete success… However it is not so when played, it pixelates or freezes? Thanks geno888 for all your help in this matter, I hope this sheds so light on the subject. Oh, and my dma was once set on pio and i ran a speed test on nero and it was around 1.2x and after i reset it to dma its 2x - 2.4x. I done this quite sometime back and tested burns before and after the fact without any difference. I will run a burst rate and post it here also.

I usually burn at 8x and it takes 8 or 9 minutes. If you have a PATA drive, you might want to see if it is in DMA mode.

Lonesome drifter, Are you just copying a DVD, burning from a DVD folder or are you Authoring a DVD? Authoringis taking one or more video files and burning them on a disc in such a way that it will play on a standalone DVD player. Authoring takes a long time, about 2hrs on my 3Ghz Athlon XP… The actual burn should be done around 8x or 12x and only take a few minutes. Organizing the table of contents and tracks is what takes up the time.
