Burn Failure?

i have recently upgraded from an asrock AM2NF4G-SATA2 board to the asrock ALiveNF6G-DVI, which has just one ide connector present. since both my hdd are ide, and not sata, this connector is used for the hdd. i had to install a VIA VT6421 RAID Controller card for my two optical DVD-RW drives (the brand of raid controller is ‘Best Connectivity’). one is the NEC ND 4571A and the other the Pioneer DVR-112D. when i now attempt to burn a DVD, most of the time, it will fail leaving me with a coaster no matter what drive i use. it only seems to work if i reboot my system each time after a successful write and burn each disc in this manner.

both drives have up-to-date firmware and i burn at x8 speed. as well as my board being new, and the raid controller card, i now have 4 DDR2 667 at 1GB each in my memory slots. unfortunately, the 4GB only shows as 2.93 as i am running a 32 bit XP operating system. although, the bios still recognizes my memory as ‘dual channel’. prior to the 4GB of ram i had just two 1GB sticks running in dual channel mode.

i am using my usual ritek media and i have very seldom had much failures in the past. the software that i use for burning is either Nero Express 6 or the TMPGEnc DVD Writing Tool. both can produce failures. any advice would be welcome.

thank you, john.

I will tell you right up front that I am not that knowledgable on the technical aspects of what I am going to tell you but your situation seems similar to mine. I have 2 x SATA hard drives, SATA LiteON, PATA hard drive & 3 x PATA drives. As of yesterday all my PATA drives are on iteatapi controller & they are not operating properly when it comes to reading. How I am hoping to solve this problem is next week, installing a promise card (I think that is what it is called) with 4 x SATA ports & 2 x IDE, so that everything can be connected & disabling the iteatapi controller. BTW the SATA LiteON operates fine reading or writing.

ODD’s dont really go together with pci raid cards.

The only thing that I’ve got anything to say about is the media.

Stop using those Ritek disks as the Ritek G05 media is very likely to fail completely a few months after burning. A switch to Verbatim would be a sensible move.

jjf07, first a late welcome.

Connect your burners to mobos IDE channel and HDD’s to controller card.
If you still like to use an add on controller card, check out this thread.

Google for the “4GB” memory thingy, it’s not related to this problem.

BTW, ask a moderator to lock your duble-thread in NEC forum section.

@ jjf07,

A few observations from your initial posting in this thread ->

You are using an old version of Nero. Suggest visting the Nero Web Site (http://www.nero.com) and obtain the newest most current version of Nero.

Both your Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-112D and your NEC ND-4571A are not operating in the DMA Mode. For the Pioneer DVR-112D to function and perform correctly requires the use of an Ultra DMA (80-Conductor) IDE/ATA Cable (http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/i...fCable80-c.html) connected correctly (note the color coding) as detailed in the provided reference and operate in the Ultra DMA Mode 4 (http://club.cdfreaks.com/showthread.php?t=101616).

Ritek G05 DVD-R Media has been noted to be problematic and inconsistent. Suggest obtaining known proven quality Media that consistently produces quality error free results such as Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim Media.

Regards,
bjkg

The burner cannot even recognize the media correctly, aside form the point that Ritek is :X.

Not necessarily so. Nero can’t determine the DMA status of devices that are not using standard M$S drivers.
