In addition to SJ’s advice, here are a few thoughts…
Platinum has features that Gold doesn’t, (for eg., Gold cannot "clone " a dvd) but there’s nothing that will get in your way of backing up a movie with Gold.
Check out this product comparison:
Definitely spend some time with the tutorial as SJ suggested.
Re: blank media…Verbatims are easy to find and are top-notch.
Online retailers and the usual brick & mortar stores will have them.
Taiyo Yuden are superb, but only available online…for most of the world anyway.
I can’t stress using good quality media enough as media issues are the most common cause for burn problems. If you have some marginal stuff already, well, go ahead and give it a whirl.
We have no idea as to your hardware, but for write speed, a good rule of thumb is to burn at 1/2 the top rated speed of the blank media.
So for 16X Verbs (the most ubiquitous), this would mean 8X…probably 12X is ok as well, but again, select 1/2 for starters.
Do not select "recommended"write speed as you configure Fab.
Choose a specific speed.
VSO is the default burn engine as it comes integrated with the application.
It works well for most users, but not well for many others and it has had more than its share of problems since last summer.
Go ahead and try it.
If you have trouble or just have questions, post a couple of burn logs.
Just copy and paste 'em right here.
This will save us from boatload of questions.
The default location is:
C:\Documents and SettingsAdministrator Name\My Documents\DVDFab\Log
Many of us use Img…[< linky…;)]…as the burn engine. It’s commonly regarded as the best burn engine out there and it’s free and very well supported by LUK! (developer of dvd decrypter).
It’s easy to integrate into Fab, but you would have to first download and install it.
There’s ton’s more, but it’s learn as you go.
Happy burning and best of luck.
BTW, love your user name…lol
