Okay, so we probably can exclude defective hardware. I'm not really familiar with XP (still using 98SE myself), but you should be able to delete the drive and possibly the IDE controller from the device manager and let XP find it again after a reboot. Maybe you're lucky.
If this won't work, I'd start suspecting the SIS IDE drivers. Uninstall and use plain M$ IDE drivers. For some reason or other (why this is I couldn't find out yet), proprietary chipset drivers can cause a lot of otherwise unexplainable problems with some burners.
Sorry for preaching again - you guys out there must be getting sick of it already...
