The British internet provider Sky will enable its porn filter by default for all new customers starting in 2016. Previously the extra service was opt-in, now the filter is opt-out, Sky customers have to manually disable the filter again.

As long as their customers can disable that filter, there should be no objection…

just because Murdoch doesn’t like pussy any more, doesn’t mean the rest of us dont!

Meanwhile, for reasons that companies like Sky will probably never figure out, users will probably start flocking to services like proxies, VPNs, and TOR.

Gotta love the definition of “adult content” that Sky uses. Who are they to define what is adult content and what is not? Granted, for lots of content it is pretty obvious, but sometimes it isn’t and then what?

This is a classic case where we should isolate the two subjects.

  1. There are troublesome aspects when it comes to the porn industry, at least parts of it.
  2. There are troublesome aspects when it comes to censoring contents by defaut on behalf of customers.

The point is that the solution to 1. is not 2.
The second only paves way to start censoring even more contents. In other words, even if one does not like porn, this is no solution to be applauded.

Now, do not get me wrong, I will happily applaud any and all opt-in filters and think that all ISPs should have many categories for customers to customize their Internet experience to taste. It is this default, even if opt-out which I oppose to.

In the not too distant past, our anchestors fought hard for their freedom of speech which we inherited and are priviledged to enjoy. Some populations continue their struggle in this respect even today.
I see this as the same and any move towards limiting the net is imo bad as it is limiting the information available to you as an individual.
