Firstly hi everyone i am kanwar the latest addition to cdfreaks. Please forgive me if i do something wrong as iam a newbie.

I currently have a SONY DVD burner AWG170A http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Sony…-DVD-R_RW.html

As of of recently i have started having some problems with it. The Burner can burn data DVD’S and CDRW’S etc but it has problems burning DVD videos. I have used many types of Media including Philips and Taiyo Yuden. The philips discs used to work just fine recently but now they don’t work.

On VSO convert X to DVD it says ‘burning layer not ready to write’ or sometimes it says ‘unable to seek requested position’ and spits the disc out. On Nero it says ‘burn process failed’. I recently opened my computer and checked everything was in place and i cleaned the inside out a bit the first time i tried a DVD after that(with Taiyo Yuden) it worked fine and burnt the DVD but since then ive had the same problem.

Here is the log of the failed DVD video burn from VSO convert X to DVD:

NB: it used to burn dvd videos perfectly well as well as CDRW’S data DVD’S etc but now it can’t burn DVD movies with the same media and also struggles with data burning etc. please help! otherwise i have no choice but to throw these shitheads sony in the bin. Any help is very much appreciated. Ive tried using many different burning programs but this doesn’t resolve it. Could someone also give me a link to an official Sony support site for this drive, if thats possible because ive looked and i haven’t found anything.

Welcome to the forum

Before to blame the drive, try to do a little test

Save files on your HDD first, and then use a burning software like Imgburn to write on the disc. Moreover, I suggest to use always quality media. In first log you posted the media was a CMC MAG. AM3, a low quality disc that often give writing problems. The “successful burn”, instead, was obtained with a Taiyo Yuden, i.e. with highest quality media available in the market

thanks alot for replying bro. I used the same DVDS for both tried trust me i think the drive is not recognising the disks properly everytime. Bro i just tried it again right it gave the Taiyo Yuden ID but still at 0.5% of burn it stopped and error came. Look at the log:

Do you think that this could be some other problem with the drive maybe its not in place properly or something(although i checked everything). Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Sorry i don’t quite understand what i should do with ‘imgburn’ is that a program, what shall i do with it?

#4

imgburn is a burning software.

However, to be sure that the drive is not damaged, can you try to install it on a different computer? You can ask a friend to do a test with a different machine

#6

You’re welcome

Try to do a little test. Download cd-dvd speed (see link in my signature) and then run it (don’t worry: it’s free and doesn’t require any installation).

This test require to “sacrifice” a disc to do a test of the burner. Insert a disc on the drive, and select the “create disc” tab. Select a burning speed, and press the start button. At the end of the test, can you post the picture?

#7

OK Geno i will do that and post the picture. thanks. i will do that as soon as i get home. aT UNIVERSITY AT THE MOMENT.

#8

i can’t even get this test to start i pressed create disc and chose the speed but the ‘start’ button could not be clicked. It recognises there is a DVD-R in it. how do you save the image by the way?

#9

To save the image you can click on the little floppy on the high right corner, and save as PNG.

If the test can’t start at all, it’s possible that the drive is damaged :frowning:

#10

on a side note you know on your picture where it says [1:1] before the drive name my one says [0:0] does this mean anything? I will try the test again and see what happens. thanks again for assistance.

#11

That value is related to the position of the drive in the IDE connectors: each drive have a different number

[0:x] refers to the primary IDE channel, and x can be 0 for the master device and 1 for the slave device.

[1:x] refers to the secondary IDE channel

#12

so what does mine means when it says [0:0] does it mean its not working properly or something?

#13

OK bro i did the test again at the 8X speed which the DVD-R’S are at and it starts the test(after going to create disc and choosing speed) then half way through an error has come. There is nothing on the bars and the test has stopped and it says
’ERROR’ NO ADDITIONAL SENSE INFORMATION (000000)

thats it it stops. what shall i do now. Here is the picture. Note the error messaage at the bottom.

#14

[0:0] should be that your drive is set as master in primary IDE channel.

If you installed windows on an IDE hard disc, I suggest to change and set the hard disc as master in the primary IDE channel and the burner as slave in primary IDE or, if you don’t have other hard discs, as master in secondary IDE channel.

#15

That is OK i have those things set right. I don’t think there is a problem with that. It can burn data DVD’S, CDR’S CDRW’S etc etc perfectly well. Can you tell anything from the screenshot i posted from cd/dvd speed of what the problem could be? do you know what ‘no additional sense information’ problem is?

#16

I don’t know what could be the cause of that error :frowning:

Are you sure that you are using a genuine TY disc and not a fake one?

#17

Now i used a verbatim x16 DVD. Again the same thing has happened. The first time i burn a DVD it works OK despite being only at 6x speed(in convertxtoddv program). To make sure that its working OK i tried it again i did it again with a different DVD. Now i get a ‘power calibration’ error and again an ‘unable to seek requested position’ the second time around. Here are the two logs from the two unsuccesful burns with verbatim x16 Discs after one succesful burn.

can’t anyone help. it seems that when the burner tried to burn it attempts to but runs out of power or is not powerful enough. Like when u’re putting the key in the ignition and it just won’t start. Can anyone help. Sometimes burning stops a certain percentage through the burn because it can’t generate power i don’t think.
