Best video capture interface (VHS and Hi8 to DVD)?

Hello…
I have a bunch of VHS and Hi8 tapes I want to transfer to DVD.

I’ve looked on several websites that sell computer hardware and have found a bunch of interfaces. They vary in price widely (and quality too, I’m sure). I would prefer USB or Firewire because I don’t want to weigh this computer down when I’m not copying tapes.

Some of the ones I’ve found are:

AVerMedia DVD EZMaker USB Gold MEZUSBGDR USB 2.0 Interface

Pinnacle Studio MovieBox Plus HDV&AVCHD USB Video Editing/Captuer 82301002231 USB 2.0 Interface

ADS Tech Video & Audio Capture Device USBAV-709-EF USB 2.0 Interface

KWORLD Video Device DVD Maker 2 USB 2.0 Interface

Creative Video Blaster Editor 70SB063000000 USB 2.0 Interface

ADS Tech ADS TECH PYRO A/V Link w/Adobe Elements V4 Video Device API-557-EFS IEEE 1394 Interface

Hauppauge Video Capture Device USB-Live USB 2.0 Interface

Sometimes the best aren’t the most expensive and vice versa. I’m willing to pay up to $150 (I know I can get a pro PCI interface for $1200).

Can you tell me which of these are good or suggest some that are better?

Thanks.

You’re way better off with an internal card…
If you want a cheap card this one is pretty good and uses a good capture chip.

Although if you want better quality I’d suggest this card instead.

Also, use s-Video if possible as it’s way better than composite.

My primary use for this particular desktop is multitrack audio recording. I don’t want to load this box down any more than I have to… for example, I have my family photos on a USB external drive, which I can shut down when I’m recording or remixing.

Are there really no firewire video capture interfaces that are even “good” quality? The videos are, after all, only VHS (some Super-VHS) and Hi8… what’s that, 400 lines of resolution? What’s important, I guess, is jitter, accurate color, and minimal artifacts… because resolution is not an issue, right?

Any other opinions?

Thanks so much.

Al.

Quality was decent enough for me.

KWORLD Video Device DVD Maker 2 USB 2.0 Interface

Quality was a little better.
