Best SL media for the 1640?

My new 1640 comes today. What SL media should I buy? Taiyo Yuden 8X DVD+R or DVD-R? I want some of these 95+% I see when checked with Nero. :wink:

Would you use any other brand? I guess the heart of my question is TY DVD+R or DVD-R? Seems like I have seen more high-percentage scans under Nero with DVD+R than -R.

I just got some Verbatim +R 8x discs to try out which are MCC 003, seem to be pretty good. With Solidburn, the burning results could maybe even improve after a few burns. But they’re not up to TY.

TY 8x +R and -R seem to generally be great. I haven’t even tried TY +R yet (I had hoped the Verbatim Color +R 8x discs would be TY… they weren’t), but my very first burn with the 1640 was a TYG02 at 12x…score was 99. :clap:

Hell yeah… that’s what I’m saying.

If Quality Score is your main consideration, then you will get higher chance of 99% with TYG02 burned at 8x, 12x and even 16x (at least I know 1620 can do it @16x.) I personally use YUDEN000T02 for other reasons (compatibility.)

But does DVD+R on the 1640 give any higher percentages than, say, DVD-R?

That really depends on media batches, I have had equal results from both +R and -R TY. There is no guarantee that TY will give you a QS 99 which really means nothing in the long run.(Just nice to look at). Plus R media will almost always write much lower PIE totals than Dash R media. So go with the +R for better quality. Just my opinion.:slight_smile:

I don’t think I’ve ever had a 99 on my 1640 using T02. Quality score is not that critical.

T02 at 12x using T03 writing strat (gives lower jitter and slightly lower PIF).
