Hi,
I used to a few years back use dvd shrink to backup my movies as my kids are small and often play with them. Now I have lost a few due to the kids and wanted to start doing this again.

What software is the best now? I read about dvd-cloner, 1click dvd, dvd fab and anydvd.

Hi jakesully and welcome to cdf,

This comes up quite a bit…best is an extermely relative term user to user.

For retail products, IMO, your best bets are Fab or SlySoft products. I own both and they work very well for all my needs. If I could pick only one…it would be Fab Platinum…again, based upon my needs and only my opinion.

There are a variety of freeware options that probably will do everything you want. An example…the combination of DVDFab HD Decrypter > Shrink > Img…and perhaps Handbrake for mpeg-4 conversions, etc.

Most of us suggest you try them all. SlySoft has a 21 day (I think) free trial and Fab a 30 day free trial.
A word of advice…should you choose SlySoft…their licensing contracts are changing by Dec 31:

Fab’s contractual policies have already changed.

There isn’t one “best” way of doing this. There are, however, only a few products still being updated to deal with new encryption as it comes out. You’ve named three of them in 1clickdvd, DVDFab and AnyDVD.

You should look through these two threads:

I currently use anydvd and clonedvd2 and they work perfectly. I’ve burned about 10 dvd’s so far and couldn’t be happier with the results. I just started doing this and I searched the net to find the best, well the problem was that every single one of them said that they were the best. I was getting frustrated until one of my friends suggested I try anydvd and clonedvd and man, let me tell you, I love it. They compliment each other very nicely and they are both easy to use. Hope you find what your looking for.

Happy Holidays…

I remember in the old days (4 years ago!) wrestling with Decrypter and Shrink. Sometimes it would take days to successfully get a good burn, but it was a lot of fun and sometimes frustration. 3 years ago I broke down and bought AnyDVD and DVD Decrypter.
AnyDVD runs in the backgound and breaks the encryption.
Knock on wood, I havn’t had a bad burn since that wasn’t my own fault.
Up until New Years Eve, If you buy them, they will be updated free for life. After the 1st, Slysoft is switching to a yearly subscription. It will still be a good deal IMHO.
As long as you set the bitsetting on your burner to DVD-Rom it’s pretty much “set and forget”. Sometimes Slysoft will send out updates 2 or 3 times a week just because a certain movie came out with a new scheme.

Good Burning!

I mainly use this combination for Single Layer. Posts #67 to #74, but please read Post #78.

For Dual Layer, I will do a full rip, (Dvd9) with DvdFab & then this.

Or if I rip with another program & create an ISO/MDS File, I will use this.
