Best (or good anyway) media for NEC 2500/2510

I have been reading for hours in these forums and I can’t seem to find the answer to this, so pardon me for asking a seemingly stupid question…or if there is a thread on this already. I didn’t come across is using “search”.

I read that MCC and TY are good manufacturers of media and are usually good but…is there a type of media that reliably yields good burns all of the time on the NEC burners? And then, at a full 8X? And works with stock fw?

I won’t run out of a 50 spindle for a year so I’d like to get my money’s worth out of having an 8X burner and actually burn at 8x. (been out long enough and being sold to consumers, I am surprised that there seems to be such a massive reliability and quality problem with DVD writers in general). Don’t mind paying $1 or even more per disc if I need to, I don’t burn a lot and quality and longevity are more my concern. I’d just hate to plunk $50+ for a spindle and have crappy burns on half…rather pay $100 for a spindle where i get good burns every time and don’t have to worry.

I got a CD burner years ago when they were at 2x and don’t recall ever having an issue with my no-name media I got when I bought it way back then. It seems that even buying an expensive brand of discs for DVDs is not a guarantee…so what do NEC owners say?

I am getting very good results with ProdiscS03 printables (both the pear/silver and the white tops) with the 2500a. I also been very lucky with RiData G04 (matt tops and printable white tops) unlike some others here that had trouble with these. I use Herrie’s FW HV2B5DLBS (1.07 v2 beta5 ) and it works very good. Had some probm’s at 8x but mostly good. At 4x and 6x rock solid with the prodiscS03.

So we’re talking about official firmwares, don’t we? There is 1.07 for the ND-2500A and 2.15 for the ND-2510A. You want to burn @8x and you want perfect burns. There is not much left:

TYG02 (JVC, Fuji, Plextor) :iagree: (be careful, Fuji has its own 8x dye in the meantime: FUJIFILM03. I don’t know about the quality…)
MCC 02RG20 (Verbatim)
MXL RG03 (Maxell)
CMC (Memorex) and RITEK (Platinum, Traxdata) discs only work @4x, but with great quality.

RICOHJPNR02 (Ricoh, Fuji, Platinum)
RITEK R03 (Teac, Traxdata) (multiple versions of this dye, some only burn @4x, but with great quality)
CMC MAG E01 (Memorex) (medium quality)
Surprisingly, the expensive brands (YUDEN000T02, MCC 003) doesn’t work too well with the NEC drives.

Note, that I’ve only listed true 8x media here. Perhaps other people here have tried other media with success, so the list gets completed… Also, some 4x media burns @6x or @8x. For example MCC 01RG20 (Verbatim DVD-R 4x) burns very well @6x as RICOHJPNR01 (Ricoh, Fuji, Platinum DVD+R 4x) does in most cases.

I like the Maxell DVD-R: burn quality (scanned with samsung sm348) is better than pressed dvds in my collection.

Thanks Legnerp.

I guess the trick is getting a box of the right brand that has the desired codes/dye then huh? (i.e, I grab a box of JVC, Verbatim, or Ricoh, it’s basically a crapshoot as to whether I will get a “good” dye or no-so-good dye). That about how it goes? In any case, I’ll need something to burn or I might as well not have a burner  so I guess I’ll end up doing just that and hope for the best.

not only that, but there are cases when the Dye-Code is false.
For example, the MCC01RG20 Verbatims made in Taiwan, are not MCC, but CMC.
At least this is what Sapa has told me.
I would like confirmation, though.

prodiscs03, 8x with 2500a, perfect burns so far. [burnt 150+]

Ive gotten good Results on my 2510a with the following :-

8x - Datawrite Grey -R 8x (Fuji Dye) from ebuyer

4x - Infiniti White Top 4x +R - (DAXON AZ1 Dye)

4x +RW - Verbatim Datalife and Infiniti 4x Rewritables

Bad Results have been any GO4 Dye and Sony dye Infiniti Samurai disks

Ive had Okish results with GO5 disks - they work but scans a bit shaky

I second a couple of issues:

  1. Platinum DVD+Rs are very good: here is a scan:

  2. I found that Fuji 4x (ID CODE: RICOHJPN01) are EXCEPTIONAL when burned @8x:

Hope this helps!

I’m been using the Yuden T01 on my 2500a with FW 1.06…… This is a typical scan.

These disk are sold at Newegg as Samsung DVD +R for $35.00 for 50 pack………

As I said on another thread, I have just used the Datawrite Grey and they are burning just great at 8x.

Samsung PLEASE we want those Taiyo Yundens in Europe too!!

Yes with TY no risk to stumble on “real fake” MCCs.

Try and for some TY blanks at a good price.

Hi Sapa:
I see, you are referring to the Verbatim “Pastels”.
Translated to Euros: 1,2 euros each one.
That is 50% more than the fake MCCs.
And, huh, 71% more than the Samsungs!!! !!! !!!

well, maybe I have to buy a few pastels to use them as reference of quality,
to compare with others…

BTW, do you know if the 25-spindle of Verbatim 4X DVD-R, is also MCC fake?
Or this one is for real? These ones cost approx 1euro/each. Considering the price, they should be true MCCs.

I don’t know for sure but you can make a email inquiry.
Somebody announced that an important importer in the UK will make them less rare and less expensive by this fall.

You might in the mean time test some Verbatims (avoid the dirt cheap lot though).

Good luck !

yes, as I ordered 100 Ridiscs a few days ago, I guess 10 pastels will be enough for a few tests. More Pastels in Fall, maybe… if the price falls.

thanks Sapa!

Be careful of the Newegg Samsung +R. I just received a 25 pack that has the same packaging as the 50 pack. The media code is BeAll000P40. Defintely inferior to the Ricohjpnr01 Ritek +R that I’ve been buying from Newegg for less money.

I don’t know anything 'bout the 25 pack, but I’ve bought (9) 50 packs in the last 3 weeks that have all been Yuden T01.

Anyone has ordered these from Nierle in Germany?ck&vk=32.99

Are they BeAll or TY?
If anyone speaks German, please translate (basically) the user opinion posted there. I have used Altavista and I don’t understand. He says that he uses them at 2,4X???

How about those Pastels in 25-spindles ?
Less than 1 euro a disk.
