What would you buy today?
I'd buy the BenQ 1620 or NEC 3520 both for $65 or less. I don't have the NEC, going on what others say. All the burners have a poll going on and NEC has the highest % of satisfied users - 86%. I'm very happy with my BenQ though, 75% satisfied users.
if your going to use DVD+R I would go with the BenQ if you just have to burn DVD-R then I would suggest the NEC. I think most of the disatisfied users of the BenQ are diehard DVD-R users who are going to use DVD-R regardless of whether or not their burner likes it.
But you can get 95-98% quality scores on quality - media with the Benq also. It might be the NEC does cheap - media better, not sure.
I have NEC so I am biased but I see a lot more dissatisfied BenQ users than I see with NEC.
Both are great burners, if they are working properly. Knowing there are reboxed BenQs out there, my vote is for the NEC 3500/3520.
In the end, why overpay for a Plextor? :Z
I bought 2 3520's and 300 taiyo yudens 8x-r
If you want a good burner and good reader for DVD & DVDR & CD & CDR the plextor would be the best buy imo
NEC is as good a burner as plextor but not readerwise. No idea how it is with BenQ and other makes
As of today I would still buy the NEC 3500. I have not seen any reason to buy anything else.
As far as reading goes thats why I have a Liteon 1662 and I buying just to try it the Aopen everyone is talking about.
their is no such thing as the best burner. all burners do different things better. the important thing to consider is what you will be using the drive for. i saw that you bought the 3520. if you are going to be doing movie backup's (most typical use) you may be disapointed. enven with riplock removed it is a slow ripper.
....because with the latest hardware and fw revisions it does everything well and you get plextools. the 716 is on my hot list. just waiting for a good sale on the external version.
LG GSA-4163B don't want anything else (except Blue-Ray and HD-DVD drives ).
Love my BenQ DW1620A. The NEC ND3520A seemed good from what I tested with it and my dad is happy with it. The NEC ND3500AG - eh, it was an "ok" drive - nowhere near what my 2500A was. On my hot list is the LG GSA-4163B, I'd love to have one but I have enough other stuff to worry about right now so I probably won't be buying any new toys for awhile.
I'm making dell replace my Philips/Benq drive because it has terrible burns on everything. I like my NEC 3500, but when I want the best, I burn on my Pioneer A07XLA. I have never had a bad burn on any media, and everything plays nice in my Standalones from the Pioneer. It's like beer. You can buy the cheap crap and get more, but if you want flavor and quality, you have to spend a few bucks...
Thats why you have the NEC cause it has the best scans.
Cheap craps will go bad with time. In the end, you still have a defective DVD.
I agree with you on the 4163B.
I really like mine very much. I especially like the DVD-RAM capability.
It is ideal for video and audio editing.
I will probably get another LG when they come out with a newer one with even better features..
I Say Go With The 6143b
