Have you looked at Pioneer’s newDVR-A05? It’s really fast and most set top DVD players supports it, and you won’t have to hurry about media shortage 'cause Apple uses the DVD-R format. Down side is it doesn’t do DVD+R/+RW. If you want something that does both DVD-R/-RW and DVD+R/+RW, Sony’s new DRU-500A might be what you’re looking for. While Sony doesn’t have the speed of the Pioneer, it makes up w/ wider media support. So the choice is yours.

If you can wait a while, LiteOn is planning a DVD=/- burner in 2003 that will sell for under $200. LG is also entering the fray with DVD burners, prices are about to start dropping fast. Hopefully the media prices will drop too!

Both Pioneer DVR-A05 and Sony DRU-500A can write at up to 4x DVD-R speed. The biggest difference is that DRU-500A can also write to DVD+R and DVD+RW at the maximum speed allowed with the Plus media available today.

In Japan, Pioneer DVR-A05 is more popular and 50 percent cheaper than Sony. In the US, some people bought the Sony for under US$250 and most of them look very happy. Soon (or maybe not soon enough to many), there will be 4x DVD-R and 4x DVD+R from Taiyo Yuden and many others.

Both LG and Samsung have waited too long just to see who the winner would be. Like Plextor and most Taiwanese manufacturers. They planned to wait and see by the end of 2002 because it was estimated the market would have grown mature and large enough to justify mass production by then. So, that future is now. Millions of personal computers from HP and Dell will have pre-installed DVD writers next year. Since Sony and Pioneer have already dropped the prices of their latest products down to nearly US$200, the Taiwanese and South Korean makers will make it around US$100 by some time in 2003.

BTW, this thread should have been in the DVD Hardware board.

Thanks fore all your replays…

In December Sony will make a firmware update to make it 4X for -R and +R.

kenshin,

You said “In the US, some people bought the Sony for under US$250 and most of them look very happy.” Do you actually know someone that bought that drive for under $250?

I’ve looked just about everywhere and can’t find that drive for less than $340.

Dell had a deal on the drive that made it $256, long over though.

well, damn. do you know of any other places to get it at that price. also, this is the type of a dvd burner that would burn dvds, xbox games. Right?

thanks
