Best drive for reading scratched discs?

I have a friend that does a lot of movie back ups and sometimes he gets a disc that will not read all the way because of scratches and he will bring it over and I read it using my Pioneer DVR-216.

does the 218 drive read through scratches as well as the other pioneer drive? I heard they changed the chip sets for the 218.

Or should he get another drive I was thinking a Lite-on iHAS drive

There’s not much data on the 218s reading/ripping abilities. It’s too new and most people are avoiding it since it doesn’t have the classic NEC chipset.

I would go with a MediaTek Lite-On (if you can find one, since newer Lite-Ons are Optiarc rebadges), or a Samsung.
