I am considring buying myself a new benq writer drive but before i do i have a question. according to the specs it burns solest at 8x for both +r and -r disks. so what happens if i put in a 2x or 4x +r or -r disk to burn (as a year ago i bought a bulk order of 500 2x -r disks and 500 2.4xd +r disks) will it still burn ok? and at what sped?

Thanks

The default write speed for unknown media is 4x, the minimum write speed for +R media is also 4x. Take DVD Identifier and post the media codes of your disks.

RICOHJPN-R00 is burned with the default 4x strategy as it is not listed in the firmware media table. You could modify your firmware with my MCSE tool (which will void your warranty) if the burning quality does not look good and burn it with the RICOHJPN-R01 strategy at 8x.

You can also use R02 write strategy for your RICOHJPN-R00 media…

BTW, 2.4x burn speed is the lowest your BenQ can handle… so please don’t even try to burn -R´s at that speed because you will most probably produce coasters.
Use MCSE to change write strategy for your dash media also. Older firmwares (**P9 and **T9) can handle this IIRC.

I hope you will be more happy with your BenQ then your just puchased Sony 720A

I’m a little bit confused. Because you’re a firmware mod, you must have a good reason to say this but… Doesn’t 1620 burn some discs at 2.4x? For example, my CMC MAG R01 burns at 2.4x without strategy swap, if I remember correctly. I haven’t used RicohjpnR00 for this drive.

@ I know that MSCE doesn’t list 2.4x media strategies. I assume 1620 plays them by ear, though I can’t be sure of it.

I have no 2.4x media, so I could not try it myself :). CMC MAG R01 is not listed in the media table at all. If it is burned at 2.4x, they might use a default strategy or take dye infos present on the disk. The +R media table has no column for 2.4x speed, that is why I said 4x was the minimal speed for +R media.
