never do flashig again - destroyed my last drive
That’s the risk you take when you don’t know what you are doing.

Consider it a life lesson. Be patient, learn, and pay careful attention before you try to do things that more experienced people do. You can’t just jump in and copy us.

#43

Indeed. When flashing, one needs to know the risk involved. I’ve flashed 12+ times at least with no problems. While I consider myself fairly competent at doing it, there is still risk. E.g. power failure, power interruption, bad download, etc. Flashing a mobo still makes me nervous though  I’ve only done it once on a Gigabyte…

I wish I was a moderator so that I could edit my own posts after 30 minutes.

Anyway, the last two were not duplicates. I made some subtle changes and found some proper model numbers to fill things out a bit in the most recent one. The list is getting to be even more accurate than ever.

Got a few more non-NXP BenQ drives to [4]: DW205S, DW220S, DW2200, DW220P, DW240S.

I’ve been collecting LO information since the 20x burners and believe me, it’s big mess…list.

Here are what Hi-Val 1640/1650 and I/O Magic 1655 boxes look like. Their part numbers were HDVD168L and IDVD16DLSE, respectively.

The CompUSA part numbers actually reflected the actual drives: DW1640 and DW1650.

I wanted to avoid using part numbers for the CompUSA, Norwood Micro, Hi-Val, Connect Computers, and I/O Magic listings because they all made lots of changes to which drives would come in the boxes, but the part numbers remained the same. Most of the time you could really only tell with a closer visual inspection of the box, so I don’t want people to have false confidence, simply because they find a part number. The only real way to find the BenQs in those boxes is to first look for a 16x speed. That’s the first giveaway, and then you need to inspect the box for photos, which did change depending on the drive. The part numbers can fool you.

But maybe, just for accuracy sake, I’ll put them back in. OK, the next list has the part numbers for the I/O Magic and Hi-Val drives put back in. The CompUSA part numbers were actually NOT DW1640 and DW1650, but rather, there were markings under the UPC code that would sometimes indicate what was what, but the part/model numbers that CompUSA gave those boxes were different.

Yeah, I guess that makes sense since if CUSA had marked them as DW1640/DW1650, that would’ve infringed on the actual BenQ copyright laws. CUSA boxes were easy to identify because they actually indicated what drive was in there. But Hi-Val and I/O Magic always needed manual inspection. Can’t believe how many rebadgers were out there before, not so much nowadays.

#54

Just one point of clarification on the Dell M9753: only some are the Philips DVD8701. At least some older models were, while newer models are made by Hitachi LG.

well…y they put on de label on top of the dvdr1660p1 with de work dw1640??is it that it is first few batches of 1650 tat is almost identical to 1640??help pls…thx…

#61

Please post a photo of the label. Make sure, all information is readable.

Apart from that, I have never heard of a 1660P that is not a DW1650. The DW1640 based drives under Philips brand had another model #.
