you should search for "pinto2"s Excel file. I used it to find my 8 Benqs and even found a Hi-Val HDVD168DL (1640) and a I/O Magic IDVD16DLSE (1655ext.)

Thanks for the tip, dave.evill. I’ve been looking for the file, but haven’t found it yet. I’ll keep looking, unless someone has a link for it?

Hey, don’t worry about it. You might have jogged the minds of people late to the party who are trying to find old drives, or new leftovers, and now they know where the list is again

#13

I agree with Dartman. :iagree: No need to worry. I’m just thankful someone else has put together a list, and thankful to dave.evill for pointing those of us late to the party towards it. And thanks of course to Parato Optimal for assembling the list!

#14

Please remove the DW1670 from the list. That is not a real BenQ drive. It has a Panasonic chipset, it can’t scan, and it doesn’t burn as well. Plus, the Sony DRU-820 series were also Samsung SH-S182 drives.

There is no such thing as a Norwood Micro DW1650 or DW1655. Norwood Micro, along with Connect Computer, Hi-Val, Pacific Digital, CompUSA, and I/O Magic, are just brand names under which BenQ OEM drives were sold. However, the drives are never identified as being BenQs on the box, and you have to be careful because not every one of the boxes that are sold under these names is going to be a BenQ drive. Sometimes it might be a Lite-On, or an AOpen, or something else, so be careful.

The I/O Magic IDVD16DLS and IDVD16DDBE are NOT automatically going to be a BenQs. Beware. You have to pay careful attention or you will get stuck with some other drive. The same goes for the Pacific Digital model. They are NOT all BenQs.

Please correct these Philips models: 1628, 1648, 1660, 1668, 1668P1. They should start with DVDR not DVD, and they are European models only. North American models start with DVD, European models start with DVDR.

The Philips models starting with PBDV are external. The BenQ equivalent models start with EW, and you seem to have left them off the list: EW162I and EW164B.

@negritude (as always) - Thanks for your wisdom!
@Parato Optimal - Thanks for your excellent spreadsheet! (can be found here)

I’ve updated the list based on all the feedback I’ve received, and Parato’s spreadsheet. Here it is.

Parato’s spreadsheet contains some specifics on which I/O Magic, CompUSA, Connect Computers, Hi-Val, etc. models may be BenQ rebadges; I’ve just generically listed them here with “(some)” appended. I also still need some help in figuring out which BenQ external models the Philips PBDV1660P and PBDV1640P were. Were there external (EW) versions of the BenQ DW1625 and DW1650? Thanks again to all!

One more to add, possibly the rarest rebadge of all:

Sony DRU-815A = BenQ DW1655

It only existed for maybe a month or two.

#17

IIRC, there was a USB only version of the Sony DRX-810UL, the DRU-810UL. Also some Sony DRU/DRX-810UL were Benq DW1650 (based on DRU-810A-R), not DW1640 (DRU-810A). I suggest adding a warning about double checking before crossflashing.

Another rare drive to add, the Philips DVD8881. As far as I know the only Nexperia SATA drive (so no retail Benq equivalent or firmware ever released) and only appeared in some Dell computers. Presumed to be a PATA drive converted to SATA internally (maybe negritude can confirm?).

BTW, a very useful list.

 1. All of the external models of the DRU-810A were called the DRX-810UL. Some had USB2-only and some were Firewire/USB2, but that difference was not reflected in the model number.

 2. There was a Macintosh specific version of the DRX-810UL called the DRX-810UL/T. The difference between that one and the regular model was probably the chipset. I believe the regular model had a Prolific chipset, which wasn’t always as compatible with PPC Macs, but the Mac specific version may have had an Oxford 912 combo chipset or something like that. Never was able to confirm it.

 3. Nothing on the label or on the outside of the enclosure would indicate to you whether your DRX-810UL or DRX-810UL/T was a DRU-810A or DRU-810A-R inside, so you have to be careful. I think the quickest way to tell which is which is by trying to burn an MKM 001. The DW1640 could burn the MKM 001 at up to 4x, but the DW1650 could only burn the MKM 001 at 2.4x (only way to fix that was with a strat swap).

 4. The Philips DVD8881 was a first generation SATA drive, with a SATA specific Nexperia chipset. It was not converted from PATA, and you could not flash the drive with PATA firmware. No downloadable firmware was ever provided.

Thanks to negritude and Ibex for the additional info! :iagree: Below is the latest list. I’ve also added the Dell M9753 - some of these (older ones) were the Philips DVD8701 (BenQ DW1640), however newer ones can be from LG. Dell may have also used other brands; not sure. As always, thanks to all and additions or corrections are welcome.

CompUSA, Norwood Micro, Connect Computers, and Hi-Val all had boxed versions of both the DW1640 and DW1650.

There were no Pacific Digital, Hi-Val, CompUSA, or Connect Computers DW1655s. I/O Magic was really the only brand that was carrying boxed versions of the 1655.

Pacific Digital really only had the DW1620. I don’t remember any Pacific Digital 1640s or 1650s.
