I have been a previous owner of a BenQ 1620 Pro. It worked for a few months
and then just stopped burning DVD's, then CD-RW's. I returned it under warranty and received a refurbished BenQ 1620 Pro. This one worked for 2 weeks and then developed the same problem. It stopped burning DVDs, then CD-RWs. Two weeks later it wouldn't even burn CD-R's somehow registering blank CD's had only a total of 540 MB of free space on them.
Finally perusing the web, this forum, and other forums, I have found MULTIPLE posts from customers that have had BenQ Drives (1620, 1640, etc) fail on them. The stories appear similar to mine. Some situations find that the drive BURNS but the media is only able to read on the same BenQ drive that burned the media. That is, it is unreadable on other DVD drives. Other stories are identical to mine where the drive has numerous errors during the burning process and the disk verification fails.
I have a fresh batch of coffee coasters consisting of DVD's & CD-Rs for anyone who wants them. Atleast more than 20.
BenQ is currently out of the 1620 Pro. I was able to convince them to send me a 1640. We'll see how this one works when I get it. Seeing that others have posted that they have had similar problems to what I've experienced does not give me much hope.
I think it's great that they are developing inexpensive drives, but I think the quality is extremely lacking. Not to mention their customer service requires over 45 minute wait time (both times I have called requesting a return authorization).
If you've experienced the same, let's hear about it! BenQ needs to work on their quality control I guess.
