BenQ DW822A - B3JCY Firmware Is Released - Long Awaited Dual-Layer Support Included

Someone else actually already beat me to this posting however, they didn’t seem to mention the Dual Layer support which I thought was quite important

Here’s a link to the other thread with far more details:

And for convenience’s sake, I’ll repost the information I posted in the other thread here:

Here is the readme text and download link from the file:

BenQ DW822A Double Layer Upgradeable Firmware

Thank you for purchasing the BenQ DW822A!

As announced previously, a firmware to upgrade the DW822A to support Double Layer writing was scheduled for release on 9/30/2004. A firmware “switch tool” download has now been made available, which allows the DW822A to switch between writing DVD+R/RW and DVD+R Double Layer, or alternatively DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW (which are as per the drives standard specification).

Due to an EPROM space limitation, the Double Layer writing codes cannot currently be fully integrated with the existing firmware’s DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW codes, and so a separate second firmware version has had to be created. The downloadable “switch tool”, by using two separate firmware versions, allows users to switch the drives writing format between either DVD+R/RW and DVD+R Double Layer, or DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW. The switch between the two writing format options can be performed as many times as desired.

A single firmware version integrating DVD+R Double Layer, DVD+R/RW and DVD-R/RW is still currently under development, and will be made available at a later date. Until such time as the single firmware solution is released, we hope that the currently available “switch tool” meets all your requirements and does not prove too inconvenient to use.

As always, should you have any queries or concerns please contact the BenQ support team for assistance. (

Quick Guide for DW822A Switch Tool

This tool is special designed for BenQ DVD Re-Writer DW822A to enable its double layer writing function. This tool is ONLY workable on DW822A, and Do NOT try to execute it on other models!

Oh and by the way, I’m not daring enough to try this on my 800@822 since it says it’s designed for the 822 only, anyone else who is willing to risk it, please let us know of your results and if you’re using an 800@822.

The DL function is supported since 30.09.04 in the firmware B3XC and a few days later in B3JCY and now B3JCY-2.:iagree:

Take a look here:
and here:

I have successfully upgraded a KHypermedia rebadged Benq DW800A to the latest FW (B3JCY-2). I was able to switch between the 2 FWs supporting DVD+R/RW with DVD-R/RW and the DVD+R/RW with DVD+R DL. I tested various disc (DVD+R, DVD+RW, DVD-R, CD-R, and CD-RW). The only discs I did not test were DVD-RW and DVD+R DL; I don’t have these discs. All discs that were tested ran with the standalone DVD players I have, as well as dvd rom drives in my computers. I used various brand disc including TDK 4X -R TTG01, Generic RICOHJPNR00, Maxell 4X +R RICOHJPNR01, Radius 4X +R OPTODISCOR4, Ridata 4X +R RITEKR03, and a generic 2.4X +RW OPTODISCOP1. I used Nero Burning Rom Some scans from KProbe2 look great, some looked like crap. What matter is they all run in my DVD players without any problems.

Sequence of upgrade:
From the box: B2*7 flashed to B3D7
to 800@822 B3EC
to B3HC
to B3IC
to B3JC
and finally: to B3JCY-2

No modifications were done with all the FWs. All FWs were downloaded from various links from this forum.

I would like to thank the knowledgeable programmers who made this possible and for their effort and dedication in sharing these FWs to us non-programmers. I just hope the DL part of the FW will work. Just waiting for the DL disc prices to go down. I am happy with my $20.00 Khypermedia DW800A I ordered from Officemax.

You can go to B3JC directly by skipping B3HC and B3IC.
