Benq DW1655 problem

#1

Hi,

I have a Benq DW1655 dvd burner and its been giving me problems. Previously I am able to burn at 16x write speed with TDK 16x DVD-R media but recently, Nero and imgburn only allows it to burn at 4x. Thinking it might be that my dvds has gone bad (if thats possible) I purchased Verbatim 16x DVD-R and still Nero and imgburn only allows 4x burns. So next I tried flashing to a newer firmware BCIB from BCHB (there was a cockup at first resulting in me flashing to BCIC but I realised my mistake and flashed to BCIB) but it didn’t help. So I downloaded DVD identifier and MCSE and flashed it back to BCHB. Below are the shots from the programs.

MCSE

DVD identifier

The firmware supports 16x and yet the drive only allows 4x. Also, I have already ensured that all my ide drives are in UDMA so I am really at my wits end here. Can anyone help?

#2

Post DVDIdentifiers Media Code block info as text using the clipboard function.

Encapsulate the data in a code block, like this

#3

Welcome to cdfreaks kiexcolo.

For some unknown reason 1650/1655 drives can stuck at 4x burning, example .
Try to downgrade firmware, install QSuite and activate OverSpeed. Also try burn with other media then Verbatim.

Interesting thing happened after I uninstalled Qsuite. DVD identifier and Nero was able to detect 16x write speed. But when I tried to burn at 16x there was a write error and it went back to 4x max. Now I will try flashing back to a older firmware as suggested in the other thread.

#5

At least the Media Code Block looks like it should, but getting just a 4x entry in the “GET PERFORMANCE Write Speed Descriptor(s)” should not happen. You did disable solid burn for known media ?

#6

I’d give BCGB a try, that’s what I’ve settled on and it seems to be a popular choice for this drive.

#7

Well I have flashed to BCGB and reinstalled Qsuite but still no go. Heres what DVD identifier says of my 16x TDK DVD-R.

Heres the history log from Nero when it was able to detect 16x after removing Qsuite but had a write error and reverted back to only detecting 4x.

Could it be a hardware problem?

#8

Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR)

0x03 indicates a media problem 0x04 is a hardware problem, but if you are getting 0x03 on more that one disc it is probably some type of hardware problem. Even a dirty laser could cause this.

I was a storage support engineer for a long time.

#9

Did some more checking and 03/0C/00 is a write error specfically.

So it could be media as I mentioned but after trying multiple discs it could be a hardware problem or even some sort of software conflict if you have multiple applications trying to access the burner at the same problem.

Don’t you just love those generic errors?

#10

Just realize that I also get Sense Key: 0x03 (KEY_MEDIUM_ERROR) when I burn with 4x. Will try a lens cleaner, any recommendation for lens cleaner? If that fails I probably have to rma it.

The bad media (0x03 error) is not related to the Write Speed Descriptor since Media Code Block is valid, so it must be something else. Did you just install Nero? Because I see InCD is installed. Maybe you can try to remove InCD from Control Panel and see how it goes.

If that doesn’t help, please check your SolidBurn (known and unknown) and Overspeed settings.

:disagree: I can ensure you this is not a hardware problem, also there is nothing wrong with “laser”.

Looks like software conflicting when drive reads information from ADIP (pre recorded information on disc).

I would try zevia’s suggestions. Clean learned media (if any) and uninstall any pocket writing software.
You can also put this drive in another compu and try from there.

Another interesting move would be to flash with Philips DVDR1668 firmware, for testing purpose only, and see if this problem persist. This action will ofcourse void your warranty.

Just a warning, if you RMA your drive, Benq will probably send you a piece of crap 1670 in its place. I’d exhaust all possibilities before RMAing any Benq drive (other than a DQ60 or 1670 since they both aren’t particularly good drives to begin with).

I have removed InCD, problem still persist. I have reinstalled Qsuite and cleaned the learned media even when it was empty, still same problem.

Tried ImgBurn with OverSpeed enabled (16x) AND disabled (4x), both came out with write errors. Below is the log for 16x.
