BenQ DW1640 Speed Problem?

I’m new to burning DVD’s, so forgive me if this is a stupid question.

I was having a horrible problem burning movies using Nero7, most would fail, and sometimes lock up my PC to the point that I couldn’t even abort the program or open the drive until I restarted. I did some research (Googled it) and found this site, where I learned about flashing firmware. My Philips DVD drive was flashed to the BenQ1640 with BSRB, and I was able to successfully burn a disc last night. Now my only problem is speed. The drive is rated to burn up to 16x, and so is the media that I am using (Memorex DVD-R 16x). So why is it that I can’t top 1.2 or 1.3x? I have tried burning at 2,4,6,8,16x, all with the same results. Any ideas?

First of all check to see that the drive is in dma mode.
Here’s a link on how to enable your drive to dma mode:

Then buy some better dvd media instead of using Memorex which is considered low grade media. Verbatim dvd media is considered good quality dvd media and Taiyo Yuden as well.

Use ImgBurn to burn your dvd media. Nero isn’t the best software to use for dvd burning.
